That's right Shifty, the Alfa 2000 was the flagship of the line in the late 50s. It didn't have the performance of the Giulietta/Giulia Spiders but was more of a luxury Gran Turismo. . unlike most Alfa Spiders of the day it was styled by Touring, not Pinifarina

The car itself kind of snored for an Alfa, come to think of it. Alfa's answer to the Mercedes 190SL?

Back when, we Alfisti thought of them as somewhat of a slug.

  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    nope...look at the hood louvers.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,111
Only other name I can find for it is a "DB 2/4 Mk III" - is that what you mean?

Sorry = I didn't realise that you hadn't named the AC Aceca when I posted my less exciting saloon..
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yep, the green coupe is a 1958 AC Aceca/Bristol, the FHC version of the A C roadster Shelby based his Cobra on.

As for your B&W saloon. It looks 1950s British, a bit like some Rileys but I don't think that's it .

Yes, it is British and not a Riley. The make was well enough known but this model was not very successful...

OK, I surrender. I can't even give an intelligent guess consistent with the suicide doors. Sometimes it's tough being a Yank.

I thought it might be a bit difficult as most people here have forgotten it too - it is a Singer Hunter which was made from about 1954 to 56 and was the last unique Singer - all subsequent models were based on Hillman models.

The Hunter was a development of the SM1500 saloon which was current from circa 1949 -54. it looked similar but that had a more modern front - they went back to a traditional grille with this last gasp.

There can't be more than a handful left now...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,439
I bet cars in Britain depreciated fiercely back then. Imagine how old that Singer looked by 1965.

I don't think many of those Singers lasted long enough to look old fashioned although it should be borne in mind that in 1965 apart from the Morris Minor which was still selling strongly you could also buy the Wolseley 1500, Riley 1.5 and the van version of the Austin A35 (a la Wallis & Gromit)...

They all looked old fashioned but still sold. The Singer was old in many ways, though, and to be fair the rest of the BMC range was either radically modern Mini, 1100, 1800 or else be-finned Austin Cambridge and Morris Oxford etc which were really 1959 designs.

Trends passed more slowly here at that time, I suppose.

I see a few shoebox Fords, and in front of the drug store near the corner I see a woody - maybe a Chevy or Olds/Buick, with a 41 Chevy in front of it.

Let's play 'when is the earliest this photo could have been taken'. This is a little before my time (even I can't imagine that) but I can't identify anything later than '51. Any sharper eyes/minds out there?

'51 looks about right to me but it's almost impossible to tell a '51 from a '52 for many of the cars in that photo.
No one's mentioned the Oldsmobile parked on the extreme right (could be a '51 or '52)

Nice going Tex, you nailed it. I'm not sure the 2 liter version was ever officially sold in the US.
