I went in this weekend just to check out the interior and get a ballpark on numbers. They showed me a few "past" deals they leased in the last couple days and everything was showing BUYING would be the cheaper route. Which is odd, but I am new at all this

Residual is based off the MSRP - bottom line number of the factory window sticker.

Yes, the cap cost is negotiable. We don't track selling prices, so can't tell you if there is room to move on yours or not. Use the "make / model / year" pull downs at the top of the page to link to the price tools.

Hiya, I'm very new to leasing and am currently wondering what Illinois is at right now for 36mo/10k and 36mo/12k? The car is the Mazda3 Sport with that $1k package.

I'm also wondering if I'm doing my math right on leasing here. Without negotiating the price, a current sale I've seen was at $18,279. I've added the sales tax (9.75). Previously listed money factor of .00018 and residual percentage of 53% on page 10. Acquisition fee at $595. 12k miles over 36 months. Registration and doc fee total of $368.15. Down payment of $1500 (my vehicle being $1000 of that). No incentives or rebates added yet.

I came out to these numbers:

Monthly Payment (Excl. Tax): $183
Monthly Payment (incl. tax): $200
Drive Off: $2,232
First month's payment incl. tax: $200
Tax on cap cost reduction and fees: $163
Disposition Fee: $300
Total Lease Cost: $9,347

Am I right on that price per month based on everything I've done? If so, that's a pretty good price, but I'm sure I can negotiate for better based on the car sale price? If I've done something wrong, please let me know.

.00018 MF and 53% residual is correct for 36/12 (54% for 36/10)
So, if you added the $595 to the CAP cost, for an adjusted CAP of $17,374, then I agree with $182.52/mo.

However, Illinois collects tax upfront. So, rather than add it to the payment, calculate the total amount, then add that to the CAP cost, and recalculate. It will make a slight difference, but probably less than a couple of dollars.

Don't focus so much on keeping the payment at $200. The finance charges are cheap (0.43% APR equivalent). Use the $1000 trade-in to cover all of your out-of-pocket expense.

That will make the payment about $213/mo,+tax (around $233/mo), but you'll have zero out of pocket, instead of $1232.
