    Could I please get the MF and Residual for an XLE and SE Rav4 AWD in 20175. Assuming 36/12. Also, any lease cash? I got a quote tonight for $26,900 on an SE with MSRP of $32,805, but that includes the $3K cash back for purchase. The lease numbers they gave me weren't as attractive, so I'm trying to figure out if it's just my zip code.

    I was hoping for the .00001 and 54% (XLE AWD) with some lease cash.

    You can't look at MF in isolation.

    Example:

    $30K MSRP, $27K CAP Cost

    .00224 MF and 65% residual = $312/mo, before tax
    .00050 MF and 55% residual = $313/mo, before tax
    You are right about the MF vs residual balance. The Tacoma has a high residual so the lease will be pretty good. On the other hand the MF increases the actual lease payment. The RAV 4 has a low MF but the residual is pretty poor. I guess after doing the calculations a good way to compare would be to do some ratios - If the lease payment to MSRP is lower then it should be a better deal. What do you think?
    That is a helpful tool for comparing lease payments.

    But, if your comparison is lease vs. buy, you have to take into account big purchase incentives, which might make buying more advantageous.
    I was always under the impression that it is better to buy a car that is a couple of years used but seems that ones that hold value are not much cheaper than new ones. So a good incentive might push into buying. The only issue is that you pay taxes upfront if you buy.

    By the way how does lease cash work. Is it on top of the negotiated price?

    There are too many permutations to find a single hard and fast approach.

    My last two cars, I've leased cheaply ($225/mo, roughly). But, given how little I drive (6000 miles per year), I think my next car will likely be a CPO luxury brand. I can get one that is 3 years old for 50-55% off MSRP and 30,000 miles, keep it for 10 years and still have less than 100K on it.

    As noted, some models hold their value well - Toyotas and Hondas tend to fall in this category. Hard to find one that is a year or two old for a substantial discount from new.

    If you want to keep your car longer than the lease term, it's better to just buy it up front, then try to lease, then buy.
