So I spoke with a salesperson at the Toyota dealership. The manager got really angry and refused to deal with me because I was in contact with a broker the week before. He said I was double-dipping and stealing his salesmen's time.
Maybe the broker gave my name to the dealership last week, assuming I would buy from him? I was just asking price quotes.

Yeah, I went to a different one and they were frinedlier and it was a nicer environment. I haven't closed a deal yet

Was offered $291 for 3/36k lease xle in Los Angeles. Msrp 27387. Taxes, registration and all fees rolled in. 0 drive off. I was not given a sale price but it looks to be around 22300. Thoughts?

Everything was rolled in. $291 represents my total monthly payment with tax. 2wd. It is a sign a drive, 3/36. True 0 drive off with 35 payments on $291. I stopped negotiating price and focused on monthly.

So, you don't know if the dealer added in any junk fees and still kept the payment under $300/mo?

That's the danger of negotiating payment, and not price - you don't know if you can do better than what's being offered.

If you can get the adjusted CAP, with everything that was added into the selling price to get to that number, we can tell you if $291/mo is as good as it gets.

I need your help to find out if the lease that my wife had contracted is too bad or just OK. I do not have good feelings about it though. It is for a long time ago and I have never had a chance to look into it as my wife wanted a car so bad at the time and I was so busy back then. It is not to regret anything as she loves the car and I am happy for her and payments are not bad, but infact to learn something for future as it was the first leased car in our family. We have always bought with cash in the past. I hope here I can learn a lot from you! ;-)

Car Make/model: 2018 Rav4 LE FWD (late July)
Lease term: 36m
mileage: 12k/y 36000 total, 15 cents/mile after
Local tax rate 8%

Here was her deal; she wanted to do 235 monthly payments with excess wear and GAP insurance and max $1000 cash advance. She was eligible for $1000 college grad rebate as well and she got it. She cared about NOTHING else!!

The issue I have with the contract is that it looks like the dealer has played with numbers the way that her benefit from rebate and cash advance is less than it should be. I believed that these amounts should be applied to the final lease cost that we are normally responsible to pay (Depreciation plus taxes, fees and charges) and not to be applied to the primary value of the car which basically I am not responsible to that whole. I mean we do not pay the tax for the whole car value either, but just the depreciation part, right? Anyway here is the break down. Please let me know if we have been ripped off and/or the dealer had taken unfair advantage of her inexperienc.

a. Gross Capitalized Cost = $25,445.88

The agreed upon value of the Vehicle ($ 22,763.51) and any items you pay over the Lease Term (such as service contracts, insurance, and any outstanding prior credit or lease balance). For an itemization see below.

The amount of any net trade-in allowance, rebate, noncash credit, or cash you pay that reduces the Gross Capitalized Cost.

c. Adjusted Capitalized Cost = $22,422.73
The amount used in calculating your Base Monthly Payment.


d. Residual Value = $14,494.48
The value of the Vehicle at the end of the Lease used in calculating your Base Monthly Payment.

e. Depreciation and any Amortized Amounts = $7928.25

We don't have the lease programs from 2 years ago, so there isn't much we can say, other than $235/mo with only $1000 out of pocket isn't too bad.

I think that depends on what state you live in - we don't have a definitive answer. Check with the bank that holds your lease for clarity.

No, as a dealer, Carmax won't pay sales tax. If your bank allows them to buy the car, prior to lease ending, then there is no sales tax.

But, you have to sell before the lease ends.
