If I negotiate on the monthly payment, what I will be missing? Where can dealer play the game?

Hidden fees, marked up MF, to start.

Always better to negotiate the selling price, so you can do your own math and spot the inconsistencies in the numbers.

Thanks Michaell. You have provided the MF and RV and based on those and dealer quoted cap cost I saw that the lease price for MDX SH-AWD for 2018 model is coming around $488 a month. Now if I want to bring down this to $400 then which part I should negotiate with dealer? Is it the cap cost or some other component?

A lower selling price is the only place to go.

Of course, that's $3000 less to get to $400.

    - Payment assuming $3,750 down to cover tax/fees: $633

    .00092 and 59%
    $2250 lease incentives

Not sure what the dealer is doing, but when I plug in the MSRP and cap cost you've supplied, I get $597/mo. Even with the $3750 up front, that's still a gap of almost $1300 to be explained.

We do suggest you roll the taxes and fees into the lease payment - if the car is stolen or totaled, you'd lose that up front money.

2018 MDX showing a new offer on SH-AWD and with tech package. Which one is better deal SH-AWD or with Tech package? With tech package, the due at sign on is around $700 less.

    https://www.acura.com/tools/current-luxury-car-suv-offers-leasing?vehiclemodelseries=MDX&zipcode=98012&offer=090111c081b4aa1e-YD4H3JJNW

My goal is to keep monthly payment including tax within $400 budget with no down payment. Is it possible to negotiate with this current offer? Thanks in advance.

One isn't really a better deal than the other. Just more equipment on the Tech package. You have to decide if that equipment is worth $20/mo. net more.

You can negotiate, but you'll have to lower the price by $3000-$4000 to get to your goal. And, that wouldn't include tax. That doesn't seem realistic. That's just the math on a $47K vehicle.

Thanks @kyfdx. Appreciate your help. With the current Acura offer, I added the numbers to a calculator and here is the screenshot of that. I removed the 'Acquisition Fee' as it was already added in the net cap cost. Could you please verify if the number looks good. This is for SH-AWD trim. One thing is not clear to me why Acura offer is saying "$3,499 Total due at signing." this is not matching with my calculation.

The CAP cost from the ad, that you entered as the sale price? The reason it's so low, is it includes the big CAP reduction from the ad ($3499 due at signing).
The ad doesn't say that $42,333 is the sale price. It's the adjusted CAP cost, after adding the acquisition fee, and subtracting the $3070 CAP cost reduction ($3499 minus $429 first payment)

You took the $3070 CAP reduction out of the equation.

Ahh make sense, thanks for explaining. I'm not sure, but can I negotiate to increase the RV? Or this is not negotiable component?

Also could you please suggest should I buy a 2017 MDX or 2018? I think major change in 2018 is integration with Android play and Apple auto. If safety features are same then I'm fine with 2017 but I'm concerned about RV, will it be low for 2017 model? Please advice.

No... the residual is fixed by the bank.

The terms are different for the 2017 model, but the incentives are higher, and you should be able to negotiate a lower payment than on a 2018 model. No idea what inventory is like, though

Hey guys I’m new to leasing never done it. I’m interested in a 2018 mdx tech. Does the $400 per month for 36months really exist or that’s just to get people in the door? Realistically how much are people paying each month to lease 2018 Acura mdx awd tech pkg I would do the 15k Miles per year to be safe. Thanks

The $400 a month is usually with about 3K down. It's never suggested to put down any money on a lease aside from the first month, acquisition fee and registration. Reality is for a 2018 Tech right now you are closer to $500 with just putting down the suggested first month+acq fee+registration. I'd also consider the base model when leasing, it's usually $50-70 a month cheaper than the Tech.

Get a selling price from the dealer and then use a lease calculator using the number Michaell provided to get a close amount. Your target is invoice pricing - minus the 2250 incentives and maybe an additional 750-1000 off below that if you are in a really competitive market. In New England it's usually about $750 below invoice plus incentives give or take.

Another way to get a ball park is check some of the big lease broker's websites to see what they are offering and then subtract about 10%. One currently is offering the MDX tech for about $485 a month plus tax for a 7500mi/36 mo lease.

I’m looking at $567/mo with $5300 down on the 2018 AWD/tech for a 36/15 lease.  That seems much higher than what I’m reading here. What am I missing? I’m in Texas. Thanks!

Texas assesses sales tax against the entire selling price, making your lease payment much greater than most other states.

    MSRP?
    Adjusted cap cost?

Assuming your $5300 covers tax, acquisition fee, DMV fees and first payment (which seems about right), then the payment looks about right. But, considering the incentive, the selling price is nothing to write home about.

It adds up, but those accessories kill your payment, as they aren't residualized. That's $25/mo, right there. Makes your actual sale price $48,904.

This doesn't seem like that great of a deal. I'd shop around.

Hello! Edmunds forums are always tremendously helpful in my lease deals and hoping to ask for your assistance again.

Please advise rates for a 2018 MDX AWD Tech?
Please advise if there are any pull-ahead programs, or loyalty discounts for those coming off a prior Acura lease (my current MDX lease ends in March, the dealer is saying he can waive the next 3 months - not sure if it's a dealership credit or Acura incentive?)
Also, the dealer is advising that they can carry over unused miles into the next lease - is that accurate and something that Acura does?
Do these typically price at invoice or below?

    Thanks much!

    .00092 MF and 57% residual for 36/15
    $2250 incentive

If they say they have a pull-ahead program, they probably do. But, ask them for the details. That should bring up any issues.
    We don't have that information.

We've heard from other members about carrying over unused miles, but we don't have the details. If you have enough, and you can take the next lower mileage allowance, that is a real savings.

Acura Finance does offer a pull-ahead program. Usually you will receive a letter in the mail from them but not all the time. It's also possible that you have equity in your current lease and the dealer could be using that to cover the remaining payments. In the end it doesn't make too much difference but there are other benefits to the Acura Pull-Ahead program. Acura will waive excess mileage, excess wear and tear, waive the security deposit and offer the roll over miles (Acura call it Momentum Miles) up to 15000.

The Momentum miles will not be on your lease agreement, it's a separate document that they will give you when signing all your paperwork. My most recent lease is for 7500 miles per year and I rolled over 15000 miles so effectively I have 12500 miles per year now.

Pricing depends on how competitive a market you live in. I'd start with invoice minus current incentives and go from there. In the Boston area, my last three Acuras have been 500-750 below that but there are about nine dealers in the area. Shop around.

Got a quote of $489 a month for a base 2018 MDX in Texas. I'm asking how they arrived at that number, but haven't gotten that info yet. Dealer screwing around. We're turning in a 2015 MDX with 25000 miles on it. I think the price is not good and am looking for comps. Also talking to other dealers! Any advice?

Can you provide RV and MF for 2018 MDX SH-AWD Base with 7.5k/10k/12k 36 months?
    In NY area.
Also what kind of discount people are getting on MSRP ($47175)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Update:
Reading through past posts looks like .00092 MF seems common to all leases.
    RV for 10K = 62%

Can someone comment on 7.5K and 12K?
Also what kind of selling prices have people been getting for Base SH-AWD?
Is 9-10% discount on the MSRP realistic?
    Thanks

Got a quote of $489 a month for a base 2018 MDX in Texas. I'm asking how they arrived at that number, but haven't gotten that info yet. Dealer screwing around. We're turning in a 2015 MDX with 25000 miles on it. I think the price is not good and am looking for comps. Also talking to other dealers! Any advice?

    MSRP?
    Selling price?
Lease term and miles per year?

Texas taxes the entire selling price, which makes leasing expensive compared to other states.

Keep shopping around. Eventually, you get a good quote - and, transparent, too. Only takes one dealer.

Realized I started a new thread when I should have been here... appreciate the help...

    2018 Acura MDX SH-AWD w/Technology Package
    Dealer is asking...
    Money down $1,835
    Monthly Payment $594.00 including tax

In 2015 I paid $1,825 down and monthly (with tax) of $560 for same terms (15K/3Y). MF then was .00055.

I'm turning in the 2015 three months early as part of an early trade-in promo. I am 2K over miles. I'm in MA.

I'd like to pay as little down as possible and put any down payment costs in to lease payments correct?

How might I negotiate down from the offered amount?

Here are the details I was provided-
    2018 Acura MDX SH-AWD w/Technology Package (3yr/15Kmiles)
    MSRP = $51,595
Gross Cap Cost (including acquisition fee) = $47,585.89
    Cap Cost Reduction = $1,835
    Residual Value Amount and % = $29,409 57%
    Money Factor = .00092
Depreciation and any amortized amounts = none
    Rent Charge = none
Any additional fees?= $464 Doc fee, $132.50 plates and registration and $595 acquisition fee
1st monthly payment included in down payment? = Yes
Can amount due at signing be rolled into lease? = Yes

All taxes and fees are included in the money down and monthly payment.
$1,835 and 35 payments afterwards at $594.00 per month and nothing extra.

As I mentioned the the cap cost reduction is ALL me putting money down vs. rebates or other dealer incentives. It appears from other responses/comments I should be looking for an additional $2,500 reduction via incentives??

    Thoughts?

    Thank you.

Since you are using the Acura Pull-Ahead Program they will waive the 2K miles you are over. You didn't say where in MA but since there are 9 dealers within 70 miles of Boston so I would call around. Your target price in the Boston area is Invoice-Incentives-500to1000. You should have no problem getting a sale price of right around 46K if you shop around.

You should be at a payment of $574 with $1170 out of pocket for Doc, Registration and First Month or $556 if you pay the Acq fee upfront.

So just to clarify. If I put $1170 (doc/reg/first month) plus $595 acquisition fee ($1765) and dealer provides $2500 in rebates and lowers selling price to $48K ($484 less than invoice) that will get me to $556 monthly? Thanks. Just want to make sure I'm following the moving parts.

The actual selling price or Cap Cost would be 45750 in that scenario.

I don't have the official selling price from the dealer but through some backwards math I have arrived at it but this seems like a very good deal to me...

2018 Acura MDX AWD Tech, 36 month / 12k, $550 all in, zero due at signing, 35 payments made by me (they cover the first months payment for me and 9.75% monthly sales tax included in the $550).

    2018 Acura MDX AWD Tech
    MSRP = $51,455
Cap Cost: (I calculated dealer didnt provide): $46,041 cap cost (including all fees + registration),
    36 months
    12,000 miles per year
    59% residual
9.75% monthly tax on the lease payments included
    Money Factor of .00092
$$ due at signing would have been: $297.50 Doc. Fee + $67.75 registration + 1st month

Adding what would have been due at signing ($550 + $297.50 +67.75 = $915.25) this is what I would have had to pay out of pocket which essentially are covered / rolled in depending on how you look at it. The way I see it, essentially I'm getting the car for $45,491 if you factor in that $915.25 that I'm saving. Invoice is $48,653 - $2250 inventive = $46,403, that would be a great selling price right? I'm getting the car for about $1000 less than this after you factor in the zero due at signing if I'm doing my math correctly. Seems like a great deal correct?? Sign it?

Thanks so much... so to move from the offered $594 per month to $556 I need to ask/get $2,250 in dealer rebates/incentives AND have negotiated vehicle price be $48K, correct? If a roll the $595 acquisition fee into the vehicle cost then I am at $574 monthly as you show in your original spreadsheet. Much appreciated. Btw, where does the amount due at lease signing 1169.89 (w/out acq.) or 1746.75 (with acq.) factor in? Before dealer was putting it in as cap cost reduction but this is now replaced by dealer rebate amount. Thanks.

The dealer does not have to disclose any rebates/incentives, what you are after is the selling price or final cap cost amount. You don't want to be applying any of your payment to lower the cap cost, you just want to be paying the initial drive off fees, first month, registration and doc fee and acq fee if you choose. Personally I pay the acq fee up front since I don't want to be paying interest on it if you roll it into the cap cost.

Your goal should be a selling price of 45,500-46,250. If it were me, I'd call around after X-mas and see what kind of pricing you will get, you might even do better.

    .00092 MF
    $1500 incentive
    61% residual.

The tax rate in NJ is 6.875%, I think. It applies to the lease payments, plus any CAP reductions, and is collected upfront.

I was offered 2018 SH-AWD Base at price of $42950 and trade-in values $3000 for 2007 Altima 2.5SL with 92K miles on it.
According to dealer the monthly payment with zero down and taxes rolled in (tax rate: 7.375) is $409 for 36/12K lease.
I was using a spreadsheet from carbuyingtips.com and that said $400.
Which one is right? Should I still shop around? I have like 8-10 Acura dealers around me.

It's never a bad idea to work with multiple dealers.

    What state?
    What selling price?

Can't speak to the accuracy of an on-line calculator.

They have the color I want in stock so if this is a good deal, I can jump on it. If it is a luke warm deal then I can look for more.

Are you happy with the $3000 for the Altima?
Is there any cash out of pocket?
    What is the MSRP?

Without all of the actual numbers, we aren't going to be able to tell where $9/mo. difference is coming from. That's only $325.
