There have been some other reports here and elsewhere from consumers that indicate that the Odyssey market in Utah is tough. Obviously, the guy was lying to you about the holdback. Sounds as though if you want new, you'll need to expand your geographical search.

MSRP on an '07 Touring R&N is almost 40K. If you can buy an '05 with 15K on it for 26 you will have done well. Mine has 24K on it now and I wouldn't sell it for 26.
  • wabalakwabalak Member Posts: 9
Well... I was looking for just the EX-L.... but, I was willing to move up to the EX-L for the price he was offering :).

I'm tempted to see how the carsdirect.com solution will work (the non-dealer version). Not sure if I could get as good a deal though if I took a trip to Oregon... heh heh...
  • wabalakwabalak Member Posts: 9
Good to hear I'm not the only one here that has been frustrated by the dealers here. I would rather be told that the demand is dictating the extra $1500 than lied to about not no holdback. I agree about the geographical search expansion....

My biggest concern about the Touring model is the PAX tires that I've read about on these forums. I'm worried about the cost to replace them. And as far as I can tell, you can't (well shouldn't) replace the wheels/tires with standard tires as the suspension/etc has been tuned for the heavier tires. Have you had any problems with them or experience here?

Btw, these forums are great! Nothing like having the freedom of knowledge shared...
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
I've posted regularly on the PAX thread about my experience. It seemed a wash to me going in. To sum up - so far, so good. No unusual wear - mine should get easily in excess of 40K. Then again, most of my driving is highway and I take it easy around town.

    Congratulations!
Can you tell me which dealership did you go to in Portland?
  • cooper13cooper13 Member Posts: 14
I'm the one who posted the price. Boy you sound like a really good ad for the dealership! Maybe you are the internet manager hmm...

Even if you are or are just another person who got a great deal there, my experience was wonderful at Pompano Honda and would recommend them to anyone as having the best price around and no bull or high pressure tactics.

I purchased my '07 Touring w/ NAV and DVD for a base price of 34,392 at Open Road Honda in Edison, NJ using their online instaquoute service. They are a high volume dealer and no one
in my home state of Delaware or in the local Pennsylvania area
could come close. This price did not include 595 destination, approx 300 in document fees or tax. Regardless, it was the best price I found. They deal with a lot of out of state buyers. Didn't haggle at all. Just go to their website and check it out....I think the address is www.openroadhonda.com, but I could be wrong. You can always Google it.

Most internet departments have more than one Sales Rep working in them. As commission employees, we divy up the internet requests that come in to the whole group. There are many places where you can submit an online request to get a quote from a local dealer.

Bought an '07 Odyssey EX-L R&N in San Marcos, TX for $30,980 + TTL at the end of November using fax attack. The dealer also threw in mud guards, bumper skin, wheel locks, pin stripe, fabric and paint protect, and cargo tray at no extra charge.

Out-the-door price including TTL was $33,162

Buying experience was terrific, especially since OTD price was negotiated ahead of time, so I didn't have to worry about any extra charges. The dealer didn't have my color on the lot, so they had to get it from another dealer. We were both surprised to find that it already had the extras on it, but the dealer didn't try to charge extra for them since we had already agreed on OTD price. I highly recommend San Marcos.

Nope, not the internet manager. Just another satisfied customer. Speaking of the manager, I told them that the reason I bought the van there since I live in Miramar was your posting!!:blush: Thanks again. Bye the way, your post sounded like an ad for the dealership as well. HA HA :P
  • buynewcarbuynewcar Member Posts: 2
A dealer in Chicago are has quoted $27,789.70 as OTD for a 2007 Odyssey EX (with fenderwell trims, wheel locks and cargo tray + TLL + Other fees). Please let me know if this is a good deal. The sale price without accessories is $25,541.30.
    Thanks in advance.
  • robbygrobbyg Member Posts: 61
That's $1,100 below invoice so that is a great deal. Buy it!
  • erik6erik6 Member Posts: 2
I got the deal through Jay Lee in Gladstone. Best buying experience on a new care I've had. Do your research. I sent price request via email to most PDX area dealerships, one in Eugene, and a local place in town. Jay Lee came in with the lowest initial quote and the bidding went from there. They will require an email offer in order to beat it. The sales guy was great.

My parents have 5 months left on a current Odyssey lease but are at the miles limit and think they may also need to change the tires.
They are thinking of going in early and are looking at the 2007. If they get hit with a $50/month extra charge to make up for turning the current van in early, I thought maybe they could make that up by leasing a 2006, since it is essentially the same vehicle. Would that make sense or is the residual going to get them?
Also any leasing costs for a 36 mos. on the EX with cloth would be very helpful. They are in South Florida
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
The residual on an '07 is probably more favorable than an '06 for leasing purposes.

What's the buy-out on their present van? Given the strong resale of Hondas, I'd run those numbers first - they may well be favorable (same as or less than the trade value).
  • ufgatorbaitufgatorbait Member Posts: 3
First off, thank you to all of the contributors in this forum for giving such great advice and numbers to begin my own buying process.

Working with the various Central Florida internet sale departments has been a good experience. I have already received email offers of 28,400 (which includes the destination charge of 595). The quote of 28,400 does not include any accessories nor does it include Tax, Title, and smaller fees such as battery disposal.

Is 28,400 a good price for an 2007 EX-L? This price seems fair especially if the dealerships throw in basic accessories such as cargo tray, wheel locks, and splash guards.

    Thank you all.
  • hondaguy67hondaguy67 Member Posts: 66
If your parents are at the mileage limit alraedy their option is to trade the vehicle for a new one.

this way you avoid all fees and charges incurred by going over mileage.

Most people do not know that like a purchase, a lease holder can trade his car in. you get the same "book value" as you would if you had purchased the vehicle. but with a trade you do not get hit with any fees from the leasing bank.
  • bubi73bubi73 Member Posts: 1
Paid $31,200 + TTL tow weeks ago for 07 EX-L w/ R+N from Rosen Honda, Gurnee. Also included mud guards. Tried the email route and they matched another dealer's price. Also, got the 4.9% financing when it was available.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Just make sure that $28,400 figure includes doc fees which have historically been quite high in Florida (about $600 typically).
  • scubaflyscubafly Member Posts: 2
Who did you deal with at Rosen? I'm planning to buy the same vehicle in the next couple of weeks? Thx
  • ufgatorbaitufgatorbait Member Posts: 3
Thank you for the advice cccompson. Are the doc fees that you refer to also known as "dealer fee"?

And if the price quote of $28,400 does include the dealer fee (which is 595 at the dealership I am speaking with), is $28,400 a fair price on the Ex-L?
  • fabyanfabyan Member Posts: 7
I posted earlier a question about turning a car in 5 mos. early. Thank you for responding with helpful information.

The dealer quoted them $25,595 for the ex-cloth, a .00164 money factor (yes, 3.936% interest) on a 36 mos lease, and a residual of 60% of MSRP.

They also quoted a dealer fee of $595 and a Honda leasing fee of $599. Is that negotiable or legitimate on all leases?

The money factor is compelling, but are the fees really in every lease?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,815
The $595 is the standard Honda Finance acquisition fee... The $599 dealer fee? Pure revenue for the dealership...

I just bought the identical model that you bought in NJ. The price I paid was about $400 less than what you paid. I thought I got an exceptional deal. I got the price report from Consumer Reports and they tell you the MSRP, dealer invoice and the actual amount the dealer really paid (which is about $1k less than the dealer invoice shown on Edmunds). The price I paid was $600 below the actual amount the dealer paid. That would mean you paid $200 less than there actual cost. Seems like we both got great deals. I don't think they would sell the car at a loss, but given the report I have it would appear that way. However, that is hard to believe. I've stopped trying to figure it all out and just admitted that I received a great deal.
  • wabalakwabalak Member Posts: 9
Quick answer: I would say 'yes', but see my answer below for qualifications.

    Long Answer:
It really depends on location, I've determined. Depending on how 'in demand' the Odyssey market is really dictates what the dealerships are willing to do.

I bought my 2007 EX-L without RES or NAV for $28,800 on Saturday. Out-the-door price was $31,000. Basically the dealerships in Utah would not go below that amount. My brother in Ohio bought the EX-L WITH the RES & NAV for $32K.

So, I guess it's like anthing else. Do all you can to get the price as low as possible by including as many dealers you can in your emails. Keep sending the emails back and forth until they tell you the sob story 'I can't get any lower than I've offered or I'll *lose* money'. They hate to hear the fact that you know about Factory Holdback and some will even deny it exists.

Then chose the dealer that treated you the best in the emails and deserves your business. If they've given you a bad time about the 'rock bottom price', chances are they'll play with you more once you step in the dealership. I chose the one that gave me the OTR price upfront without any word-play.

If the market is tight like it was in my state, you'll have lower your expectations a bit on price or model you are looking at. And believe me, I haggled non-stop for a week.

So far, I'm pleased with it. I just couldn't justify the $1500 extra the RES would have cost. The portable players work just fine sitting on the middle seat.

    Good luck!

not to be a contrarian but the standard is 595 aquisition fee and a 595 D&H fee. these are not pure revenue forthe dealership. the AQ fee goes to the bank and the 595 goes to the dealer which in turn has to pay Honda that same amount.
  • hondaguy67hondaguy67 Member Posts: 66
I have a place you can do better at. They will beat your price.

call Honda on Grand in Elmhurst. Ask for The owner or sales manager.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,815
Our poster didn't say anything about a destination fee.. He labeled it a dealer fee..

Dealer and document fees are pure revenue generators and many dealerships use them..

Also, any dealer that adds a destination fee to your deal, after negotiations are completed isn't being completely above board and honest.. Destination fees are part of the MSRP and invoice, and should be part of the negotiated price. To quote a low price, and then add that on is disingenous, at best..

Being a contrarian is okay, though... otherwise, we'd have nothing to talk about.. ;)

    regards,

I will agree that if a dealer adds it on after negotiations he is not above board, I was only trying to point out that those 2 fees are real fees. not a profit builder for the ddealer. I am sure instead of the 599 he meant 595 D&H. At least that is what it seems like to me :P ;)

    wabalak,

I really appreciate your feedback and response. Did you get the dealership to throw in any accessories for 28,800?

There is certainly a difference in the methods and sales tactics between internet departments.
  • tcltcl Member Posts: 42
I think the $595 is the destination fee for transport the van to dealer from factory. Usually it is included in the quote. What you need to watch for is the docs. preparation fee. A fair dealer usually charge $40-$50 to do the paper work. Some may charge up to a few hundred dollars. $28,400 is a common quote in Southern California. It go as low as
    $ 27,348 for a 2007 EX-L.
  • mikeremikere Member Posts: 3
I am in NJ looking for the same car, or maybe ex-l without (R&N) Would you mind letting me know which dealer you got it from . any particular sales person I can talk to. many thanks.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Yeah, it's the same thing. 28.4 is a great price for Florida and shows just how much the market has changed in a short time.

To compare, my father bought an '06 EX last May. His price (probably not the best he could do but fairly close) at Space Coast in Cocoa was 30 even plus TT&L.
  • wabalakwabalak Member Posts: 9
No accessories at all... no matter how hard I tried.

Someone posted a few pages back in this forum (can't remember off-hand) some links to where you can buy them yourself for a reasonable price compared to the dealer. That is what I'm going to do for the mats and lazy susan.

BTW, has anyone actually purchased a lazy-susan for an EX-L? Curious if it fits fine or any 'gotchas' to know about. .
  • jrlucasjrlucas Member Posts: 7
Using both the fax attack and an email attack, the best base price for the 2007 Odyssey EX-L with Navigation and RES was $30,585. That was $833 below invoice.

I target 25 dealers and received 15 responses.

What I found, however, was fluctuating out the door prices.

I will post the full results this weekend.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Correction - I misspoke in my last past. My dad's price on an EX-L last May in Cocoa was 30K even out the door (all taxes and fees included).

Sometimes I think my mind is starting to go!

Been lurking for a while and found information on this site very helpful. Thanks.

Purchased '07 EX-L Res on Saturday December 2nd and thought I would contribute my buying experience.

I called Gerald Jones Honda (Augusta, GA) on a Saturday morning (Dec. 2nd). The internet salesperson was not working so I asked to speak with a sales manager. I told him that I was ready to buy and, if the price was right on an EX-L (blue or red, no Res, no Nav), I would be there within the hour. We agreed on $28,500 (incl. dest. charge, mud guards, fenderwell trim, cargo tray) + $295 doc fee + TTL for an EX-L in black (they did not have red or blue in stock). I thought this was a fair price if we could do the deal without the drama or games. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was really dealing with a sales manager. He gave me the keys, I took it for a ride, and they valued my trade-in ('00 Volvo V70XC). Unfortunately, there was a paint blemish on the front right quarter panel of the EX-L (I don't think I would have seen it if the sun wasn't shining on it), which looked like a circular burn pattern from a buffing wheel. They tried to fix it, and it looked better, but if you knew it was there you could still see it.

I told the SM that I would not buy the black EX-L and politely reminded him that once I walk out I will be calling other Honda dealers and may not come back. We walked around the lot and saw an EX-L Res in blue (Ocean Mist), which he offered for $29,500 (minus the extras). I spoke with my wife and within 10 minutes the SM and I agreed on $29,500 (incl. dest. fee, mud guards, fenderwell trim, cargo tray) + $295 doc fee + TTL and that he gives me an additional $500 for the Volvo (he balked at the extra $500 when we were discussing the first Ody). We also got the 4.9% Honda financing that ended Dec. 4th. The SM had one of the salesman do the paperwork and, from start to finish, I was at the dealership for about 3 hours (which includes the false start on the black EX-L and several short waits while the SM did his day job with the regular salespeople).

Overall, surprisingly pleasant, straight-forward, and relatively painless experience.

Has anyone run into the problem with their rear window defroster, on the right hand side is not working? My back defroster on the lift gate works fine, except for the one on the right. Please let me know. Your opinion and inputs are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Was that $30,585 plus taxes, fees, tags?
I'm in NC and right now I have the following on the table for the same car:

$32,000 plus $165 fee $89 tag so 33,214 to door
One dealer said he'd be the total price by $200 so $33,000 delievered, but I'd have to drive 2 hours.

    Am I getting ripped off?
Thanks much for your help..this has all been very stressful.
Also, I see a lot of folks extract some extras, is that very common?
  • goingon3goingon3 Member Posts: 10
quicksilver, did this include tax and all fees?
so $31,500 for EX l nav and dvd $31,500 out the door?
    WOW...lmk....thanks.
  • tarheel4tarheel4 Member Posts: 5
I've contacted several dealers in NC, and the best price I'm getting for an EX-L with RES and nav. is $32,275 out the door (including all taxes, fees, etc. and mudguards). Base price was $30,286. Without nav., base was $28375.
  • goingon3goingon3 Member Posts: 10
    wow...what dealership? city?
i just did another round of calls and got it to $33,000 out the door, so that's $725 better.

btw, what colors? seems like some colors carry a slight premium in this trim level.
  • tarheel4tarheel4 Member Posts: 5
Charlotte...Crown. Just fill out an internet quote request on their website. That's the price they came back with. It wasn't color-specific. Don't know where you live, but I've heard that Honda of Concord and Honda of Lake Norman are also very competitive (from friends that have purchased there).

    Greetings everyone,

Appreciate all the information I've read on this forum. I am shopping for an '07 EX-L (No res or nav) in Nimbus Gray, and have the following offer from Sport Honda:
    $27003 for auto
    $595 destination charge
$291 for cargo tray and black all weather floormats accessories
    $49 processing charge
    $247 tag, title, lien
    $1397 tax
    $29585 total out the door

The car w/o all processing, TTL, and tax is $27889, $709 below invoice. Edmunds TMV is $31087. The only thing is that the dealer has to go get one, since they don't have any on the lot. But the guy said that if the one he does find has an appearance package, whatever, it won't affect the price.

Any feedback on price or Sport Honda in Silver Spring is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    George
  • thekurganthekurgan Member Posts: 6
    George,

That looks like a pretty good deal, I am shopping in the area for the exact same vehicle (except color).

I think you are actually further below invoice than you think, you included your accessories in your comparison and they shouldnt be, they are optional extras, and are not included on the invoice price of the car. Basically he is giving you the car for exactly $1000 below invoice (ignoring dest fee), 27003 vs 28003, and charging you a $50 process fee. Thats a good deal!

I actually have a better out the door offer, but only because my tax is less, I live in VA where tax is 3%, I assume you live in MD hence the higher tax. Also I dont have cargo tray and floor mats added in. You might compare the cost of buying them yourself separately, search thru this thread for a link.

I've contacted several dealers and am still shopping, havent been in touch with Sport Honda though, I'll give that a try in the morning. Please email me your contact person and their email if you get a chance.

Try Ourisman Honda in Bethesda if you havent already and ask them to beat your deal.

Keep me posted on how you are doing and I'll do the same.

    Thanks!

Could you tell me which dealership you got the deal from in Utah? I'm in Salt Lake City also and would like to get a similiar deal.

Thanks so much for your help!
  • aroth23aroth23 Member Posts: 6
I ended up buying from Planet Honda (Rt 22 in Union, NJ). I got an out the door price via internet/e-mail and they broke down the cost by its components. The person I e-mailed back in forth with at the dealership was Tercia Leite. Then when I went to the actual dealership I dealt with a sales person by the name of Sammy Castro. Overall it was a positive experience and I did not feel pressured. It was the best price I could get and I tried about 5 different dealers. I would simply go to their website and request a quote and see what they give you. I was initially pricing the EX-Ls w/out R&N and those were great prices as well. Good luck!

Hello. Did all my research before setting out to buy a certified odyssey. In fact, I scoped out all the local dealers beforehand and took all the info of all the vans (mileage, displayed price, color, picture, etc...) I was taking a risk cause I would have to go back a few days later and negotiate. I risk the specific vehicle would be sold to someone else. Anyway, after researching the vehicle cost, I went to the dealer that had my first choice van. It was still on the lot. To make a long story short... Edmunds say the cost of the specific certified vehicle is 19800 + TTL. So I negotiated a price that was $1200 less. How did I do it? I said I want to put $500 money down, no trade, and agreed to their interest rate of 9%. I purposely left my checkbook, credit cards at home and said I would bring my down payment the following day. So I signed all the paperwork. The next day, to the Financial Manager's suprise, I said I will pay it all off. I handed him a cashier's check and signed the proper paperwork again, but not before he offered to lower my rate to 4.9 %. As I left, he threw the folder that had the paperwork on his shelf. I guess he thought he would make a killing on the interest he was charging me.....NOT :P
  • bulbbulb Member Posts: 5
I am in MA, the best I got among about 10 dealers right now is $30545 including destination. Another dealer promises to beat the price - I guess maybe by throwing in some accessories. Will post results after the deals done.

Thanks everyone in this forum. Great help to me in these several weeks research.
