I'm looking for a 05' Toyota Tacoma, manual with the bare minimum, new. What is the best price in the Dallas Forth Worth area? Or, what are the best dealerships with the best incentives?
  • motomanjdmotomanjd Member Posts: 4
I looked at a 05 Tacoma Access Cab 4x2,4 cyl. Auto SR5 package #2. It had a sticker of $20,535.00. They said best price they would go is $19,105.00 + tax & Lic. I didn't buy one yet. I would like a Pre-Runner V-6 but $23,000.00 OTD is my budget and it doesn't look like that will happen. I could get a V-8 Tundra well equipped for $22,000.00 OTD but that V-8 would kill me and the size of the Tacoma is just about right.

What do you think of Fred Haas or Gulf States Toyota? Fred Haas is near my house. I'm thinking of getting a double cab Tacoma, just doing the initial searching now.

I am having the same problem which is aggravated by the fact that every single TX dealership has the truck I want listed as "available" on their web page. I have had two dealerships tell me that it will be pretty much impossible to get my truck -- automatic access cab with 4WD and the OG pkg (offroad pkg #2). I don't really know what to do about it, since I don't want the double cab nor do I want a sport package. How frustrating.

Before purchasing those Extended Warranty's, check with your insurance companies and see what they offer. I have Geico and they quoted me the following extend warranty coverage for a 05 Access Cab 2x4...; (1) - 7yr/100K Bumper to Bumper with a $250 deductible (for each occurance.) (2) - Pay $50 for any glass replacement - you will not have to use your comprehensive portion of insurance. (3) - Free towing to get the vehicle to a repair facility of your choice and this would include a Toyota Dealership. (4) - $25/day allowance towards a car rental during repairs (maximum $750.) Warranty cost = $20.90 every 6 months or $292.60 total for 7 years. If you had to utilize the warranty outside the mfg 3-year warranty and had 3 separate incidences, yes, this would be more expensive than the $800-$1000+ people have been paying for the Extended Warranty. If Extended Warranties offered by the dealer also have a deductible this might be a way to go. Question: Do Dealer Extended Warranties have a deductible? If so, how much?
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Be VERY careful of the "extended service program" through GEICO. The deductible is not just per occurance, but per convered component. So... if you need a rack and pinion replaced, say 20 parts for that repair, you would have the deductible due for EVERY part needing replacing. I looked into this myself before purchasing my last vehicle and once getting the clarifacation, decided to get the Toyota Platinum program.

For those buying an extended warranty you can purchase the toyota bumper to bumper 7 yr/ 100,000 mile 0 deductible warranty from the Toyota dealer in Greenfield MA for $875 for the 4x4 and I think its $800 for the 4x2. I you have purchased the warranty in the last 30 days you can get a full refund and repurchase it from this dealer - if its been longer than 30 days, sorry. And as stated earlier, the extended warranty can be purchased any time prior to the expiration of the 3 yr/ 36,000 mile warranty.

I was speaking of NUMMI employee discount. About $800 off invoice from what I see.

Hey Jeff, Whats the invoice price on your truck?
  • jeffjeffjeffjeff Member Posts: 54
    Mdaniels1

Not sure, but here is the information that I do have:

    Pricing*
    MSRP
    Base $24,750
    Options $3,845
    Del, Proc & Hndlg $595
    Documentation Fee $399.00
    Total $29,589

$26,500 was the final price plus tax, tags and other fees. I have cancelled the search for this vehicle due to various reasons. I will resume the search when the 2006 models arrive on dealership lots later in the year.

    C4 Floor Mats, F&R (PIO) 80

    PRICING BREAKDOWN Base Pricing 19,644.00
    Destination Charge 565

    Subtotal 24,123.00
    Tax 1833.348
    Title 380
    Documentation/All Other Fees 280
Final Out The Door Drive-Away Price 26,616.35

All the invoice prices check out fine on edmunds and kbb, the fleet mark-up is only $200 because the dealer mis-quoted the truck 3 times (sorry for the "mistakes" - ya right).

They let me walk out with the quote above citing that they cannot remove the TDA fee (Toyota Dealer Advertising). Is this a legitimate fee or can the dealer remove it and still come out above invoice on the truck?

Please advise on everyone's experience and knowledge regarding this TDA fee.

Thanks for your help!!! - Hammer out
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
TDA is a legitimate charge assessed by Toyota to the dealers and I have not once in over 10yrs of working with Toyota's, at least here in the Northeast, ever had one of the dealers I've worked with negotiate on it. It is a charge that varies by the area of the dealer however, with larger market areas often having larger charges for TDA than smaller market dealers. Hope this helps.

To add to what toyotaken said (or to clarify), the ad fee is something that Toyota itself charges, not the dealership, so the dealership doesn't have the power to negotiate away the advertising fee. I could be wrong, but I think it's printed on the window sticker. You can read our Toyota Advertising Fees discussion for more info.

But if you are looking for a lower price, you'll have to negotiate on another charge rather than the advertising fee. It's a nice truck, and the price looks reasonable to me - I wouldn't let it go over a fee that the dealer has no control over!

    Kirstie,

Thanks for the additional info and good point. Don't get too hung up on the details as it appears they are giving a pretty decent deal as Kirstie said.

    Thank you Kirstie and Ken!

Just by way of disclosure are either of you affiliated with Toyota in any way? Not that I'm paranoid, but after Saturday's session at the dealership I'm convinced everyone is out to get me!!!

How about the Dealer Holdback? There is a 2% Dealer Holdback/Factory to Dealer Incentive (2%) that pretty much offsets the TDA fee. I pointed this out to the dealer and he said they only receive the Dealer Holdback if they meet their quota. I thought they get it on every unit they sell.

I appreciate your advice to not get caught up in a fee of this magnitude, but this is the 4th round with this dealership (previously quoted lower price only to reveal "mistake" when I made down-payment).

I don't trust this dealer, but they offer the best price of three sources in my area.

    Ugh. Thank Again! - Jack
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
    Jack,

I work for a dealership in Buffalo, NY and have worked with Toyota's going on over 10years. If you're really not comfortable working with them why don't you see if one of the dealers that you're more comfortable working with would be willing to match their pricing? Also, if they're already the most comptitive price, what else are you hoping to accomplish? Again, Holdback is an assessment that the dealer DOES get back from the manufacturer, but almost no dealer will negotiate into the holdback. This is in place specifically for being able to sell vehicles at or close to invoice and still be able to have enough revenue to keep the store open and pay the bills.

As I always say, the best price is NOT always the best deal, and is saving $100 worth having to feel like you have to take a shower when you deal with someone? Not for me personally. Just my $.02. Good luck on your purchase.

I appreciate your comments and perspective, Ken. I verified the TDA with some other sources as well. I've decided that $200 over invoice (including TDA) is a fair price and just need to spec the exact truck I want.

I'm tring to decide between the Sport (PT) and Off-Road (OG) packages for the 2005 Prerunner (7188).

I like the lumbar support and color keyed grill/door handles/mirror/bumper of the Sport package (but I'm not too crazy about the hood scoop).

I like the locking rear differential, skip plate/gas tank protector of the Off-Road Package. The wheels look more rugged on the off-road, but I'm OK with the 17 inch wheels on the Sport as well.

Any other considerations I should note? Which do YOU prefer and why?!?!?

I need to make my mind up quickly... Thanks for any inputs! - Jack
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Depending on the price differerential, you could always purchase a replacement hood from the parts department without the scoop and have it painted to match. Just either stow the original hood or ebay it.

Other than that it all comes down to what you prefer in look and ride quality which there is a difference.

    Good luck on your purchase.

  • jackhammer1jackhammer1 Member Posts: 13
    Ken,

I test drove both the Sport and Off-road Prerunners (just around the block), and didn't notice much difference! Are there more pronounced differences between the two in ride quality at highway speeds or other driving conditions?

Man, I hope that scoop doesn't start to whistle at 75 mph!!!...

    Thx Again - Jack
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Nope, haven't heard any noise from the scoop at any speed. However, you may want to see the ride quality of the two different suspensions on less than perfect roads. Some people like the firmer ride with the bilestins, some don't, some can't tell the difference.

I was quoted $1000 over invoice on a 4x4 DoubleCab ShortBed with the #2 Sport Package (PT). Can I do better than that? I don't care about going around the US to find a vehicle, I'm in Socal.

    Thanks!
  • jackhammer1jackhammer1 Member Posts: 13
    abovo,

I just ordered a 7188 Prerunner Double Cab short bed with PT, DZ, CF, and BK. In AZ the TDA for this truck is $471 which shows on the dealer's invoice but not on the edmunds or KBB invoice. Taking this into consideration I paid $200 over invoice - the total OTD price is $26,791. This is a special case because the dealer made 2 previous pricing errors and cut the markup to $200 after I walked out on them.

My next best alternatives were $500 over dealer invoice and they had higher doc fees. Just remember $500 over invoice plus $471 TDA will look like $1000 over invoice on the edmunds/kbb sheets! None of the dealers or brokers I consulted would drop the TDA (said they couldn't - negotiated other stuff but not that!).

Hope this helps and good luck! - Jack

    Ken,

Just wanted to let you know that I just ordered the Prerunner Double Cab with the SPORT package. It will be here in 2-3 weeks. I like the color coded handles/mirrors (although I wish they left the grill and bumper chrome!). I like the sport wheels (off road ones are nice too), and mostly I loved the ride and handling feel of the sport buckets with lumbar support.

The LSD better not leave me stuck in the sand when I go mountain biking, and hopefully some day the cheesy hood scoop will grow on me!

Now it is time to accessorize. Where are the best deals to get items like the ovalized tube steps, spare tire lock, locking lugs, bike attachment, etc?

    Thanks again! - Jack
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
The first stop I would make is at the parts department at the store you purchased your truck from. This may not be where you actually purchase the items, but they should have a pretty good listing of what you need. Be sure to ask for a discount as they won't give you one without asking. With the name-brands of the accessories you can do some shopping online. The spare tire lock is likely most easily done before you pick the truck up at the dealer. Depending on how comfortable with tools, the rest are pretty easy to do yourself.

For the bike attachment, you probably want to look into one for the hitch and one that mounts over the bed. I prefer the ones that mount over the bed so that you still have access to opening the tailgate though.

Congratulations and keep us informed of your experience picking it up and choosing the accessories.

In today's paper, there is an ad from North Hollywood Toyota selling a brand new 2005 White Tacoma Access Cab-Pre-Runner, V-6 Automatic, power everything. MSRP-$23,353; sale price-$18,995. That's $4358 off sticker price. Best deal I've seen yet. Almost wish I'd waited a few months.
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
I'd read the fine print on that ad... sounds like one of those... too good to be true... Are you sure it doesn't have "with $2500 cash or trade equity down"???

    Just curious.

No, I went down & looked at it. No fine print. If I didn't already have one, I'd have bought it. They will probably sell it before the weekend is up.

Got a quote for $500 over invoice which is $23,674, plus $1290 for the SnugTop Shell. It'll be a silver Double Cab Prerunner 4x2 with the TRD Off-Road package #2, code OG. Does this sound good?

Got quoted $25776.33 for the SR-5 package #8 OTD. I'm in CA.

I got 05 Tacoma prerunner. access cab, auto, 4x2, w/ TRD off road package #2, the msrp was coming to 25050 i believe, but got it for 1000 under invoice. $21841+ tax=

Sorry, apologize in advance for not knowing my option codes. But I was quoted at another dealer for $27k OTD for a LB DC 4x2 automatic, SR-5 package #8.

Another dealer said $500 over invoice for any package one, SR-5 package #8, TRD off road w/ tow or TRD sport w/ tow and cost for any PIO. He will send in the PIO items on the build schedule, and I'll take delivery in about 2-3 wks.

just bought silver 4x4 double cab shortbed with #2 OG offroad package and six speed manual + jbl 6 disk changer and tow package. Bought at Poway toyota here in SD. invoice was 25, 900 and they let it go for 26,800+tax, title, license fees. They got it on Thursday and I bought it on Saturday. Probably could have negotiated a better deal, but I've been having a hard time finding this configuration in auto or manual here in San Diego. Manual is fun to drive and fairly smooth. Tacoma purists told me the manual is the only way to go with the trd off road 4x4 configuration. Only my second day driving it and I'm really liking it.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to buy a 05 Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed w/ TRD Sport or Off-Road package. I've been getting quotes online from dealers in my area. This will be the first "new" vehicle I've ever purchased. I need a little advice on pricing. I have a set price in my mind that I'll let myself go to but I'm not willing to go beyond it. I just want to make sure I'm making a good valuation of what the actual price should be. I'm noticing that dealer invoice is about 10% less than MSRP. I figure I want to stay close to dealer invoice but am willing to give a little to let them make a living. I really need advice on tactics. I told them what I wanted and typically they come back with something that closely matches what I'm looking for. They give me the MSRP and then the "Internet Price." I notice that the invoice price is usually about $1200 to $1500 above invoice (the number I calculate and also the dealer invoice number they give me when I ask for it). How do I counter? Do I give them a price below dealer invoice and work back and forth until I can get $200 to $500 above invoice? I'm in a market where there are about 10 dealers within a 50 mile radius. So far I have about six giving me numbers. Say I have an MSRP of $29,800 and they say my price is $28,000. I figure that's about $1200 over invoice. Would $26,800 be a legitimate target I can reach? Lower? How would you attack that situation? Thanks in advance for the advice.

I posted this earlier. As you can see I got this 1K under invoice because the dealer was trying meet quota on June 30, I happen to call on that day, i also checked price on carsdirect.

Don't be afraid to offer anything even if it 2K under invoice, Dealer shouln't be upset, if they want your business. If they are upset which they'll look but that is just and act. If you let them talk they talk and talk until your are in their control. Dealer we went to actually tried to charge us higher finance rate so he can get the kick back and still break even. I wouldn't go for that. So at 1AM at the dealership, i told him i didn't want the deal and finally he matched what rate i got from capital one. The dealer actually told me go get a job.

Hey guys, I been reading on the forums that some of you guys don't like the hood scoop, colored grille and bumper. I bought a black sand pearl access cab V6, manual tranny, with the trd offroad package #2, and i wanted a clored grilled and bumper and even the hood scoop but it didn't come with the package. I live in Orange County California, anyone want to trade me for my regular hood, chrome grille and chrome bumper? oh, and by the way back in April I got my truck for 21,100 + Taxes. It was at the Claremont Dealership and those guys were great and were very helpful, incase anybody is in the area and looking to buy a taco.
  • ruskastudruskastud Member Posts: 34
Man, that's over $3k under invoice. How'd you swing that? I just got the exact same thing in KC for $600 over invoice ($25,500) and thought I got a steal based on other posts and local dealer quotes (MSRP/sticker was almost $28k). Same offer here in KC if anyone wants to swap out hoods/bumpers.... I'm more interested in getting rid of the chrome rear bumper than getting the hood scoop.

Wait, is yours 4x4 or PreRunner? That could explain the price difference..... Mine's 4x4..... :D

I have been looking for a black double cab 4x4, manual transmission, with trd offroad package, lowest I can find is $30,000 out the door. I'm here in southern california. Seems to be that only a couple dealers have that exact model. What do you guys think would be a good price for it? I sure know 30,000 is too much but no one is willing to budge.

Back in June I worked out a deal for a 05 Impulse Red Taco V6 4x4 /w SR5 #3. We signed an offer sheet which had our agreed price, the down payment and amount offered for my trade, They said they needed a deposit so I went ahead and put my $1500 down payment on my Credit Card. I was told I should have the truck in a few days. Well the next day i get a call saying that the truck they were going to get me has already been allocated somewhere else so it could be 4-8 wks. I was not happy about this but did not want to back out because I got a great price on the truck and a great trade in offer, the dealer asked me to bring my trade in because it was high mileage and they didn't want me running up more miles on it and that they would put me in a Toyota Rental at no charge to me. Well fast forward one month, now I am being told that they don't know if Toyota is going to make my truck but i can have a silver one similarly equipped for the same price. To me the color change is unacceptable, if no truck is made for me does the dealer have an out or will they have to get me an '06 for the same price?
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Both of you have the option to say "no" to the deal prior to you taking physical delivery of the truck. If the papers you signed say that the truck you have a negotiated price for with specific equipment is an '05, then, no, they are not obligated to get you an '06 for the same money. You may, however, speak with them and see if they'd be willing to do that. Seeing as there should be about a $300 price differential between the two years, it is unlikely.

I am replying to the comment below. I believe those prices on the ads are true. They most likely are lose leader which also most likely means one in stock. They usually appear on the paper on the weekend ad starting out Friday. When someone sees it in the ad, he or she has to be the first one to show up at the dealership on Friday/Saturday. The buyer will have to be flexible in terms of color, options, and transmission. I know it's true because I have bought a couple of those cars. They are most often the best deals.

Well I finally got my Tacoma. I pretty much did my leg work through the internet and got quotes from dealers online. Pretty painless. I ended up with a Double Cab SB Auto 4WD with TRD Sport package (w/ Bridgestone tires). FE,EJ,GY,RL,PT,V5,C4,TG. Didn't necessarily need or want the JBL upgrade, security system, d-rings, and curtain side airbags but it seemed like all the Sport package trucks in this five state region had those options and it would take some time to get something that didn't have those options but had the sport package. MSRP was $31100 and invoice was about $28K. My purchase price was $28500 +TT&L and I received $400 cash back for graduating from college within the past couple years. So purchase price was essentially $28,100 + TT&L. I think and hope I got a decent deal. Other dealers were about $1200 to $2000 over invoice. If I offered anywhere near invoice or below they'd ignore my emails and tried to contact me by phone. The dealership I went through was extremely nice and the experience was the best I had purchasing a vehicle. Anyway, I love my Tacoma. :) Besides my new house, it's one of the best purchases I've made. Smooth and quiet with lots of power. Turns lots of heads too. I appreciate all the info that's been posted in these forums it helped greatly in my process to find my truck.

Thanks for all the previous post regarding prices paid. It helped me to get my deal.
I emailed about 12 dealers looking to get close to invoice. Only a few emailed back so I started to work them against each other. The most I could get them down was about $1000 - $500 over invoice. I would have settled at the $500, but I was not getting many results. I realized I needed to call. On my first attempt, I called the farthest dealer (about 1 hour drive outside Boston, 1.5 hour drive from my house) who accepted over the phone an offer for $200 over invoice, but they would have to find the car and I would need to come in with a deposit before they started the search. He was surprised that my offer for $200 over invoice was not accepted yet. Once I had his offer, I found a closer dealer that I had previous car service at with a close Tacoma package. I stopped by and looked at the car, walked in, asked for the sales manager and made my offer for $200 over invoice telling them I already had an offer for this on the table. They accepted without hesitation. This same dealer through their internet sales department was only about $800 over invoice.

Just picked up my 4WD Tacoma DC, LB, V6, Auto, Indigo Ink Pearl yesterday and the ride is nice so far. My prices with the options are as follows:
    MSRP/Invoice
    Base: 25,250 / 22,886
    SR5 #3: 1,525 / 1,220
Carpet Floor Mats and Door sills: 188 / 115
    Roof Rack: 339 / 219
    Fuel: / 6
    Destination: 565
    TDA: / 353
    Total: 27,867 / 25364
I paid 25564. Could be $200 over or $553 depending on how you categorize it with TDA fees. I felt like it was a good deal until my trade came in at a low price. I was hoping for $600 on my 90 Celica (needed tires to pass inspection), but was only offered $172. I was able to get them to $250 with 2 oil changes, 3M ScotchGuard treatment and paint sealant (detail wax) for a value of about $360 more. They were willing to throw labor only at me for the deal.
How are most of you categorizing invoice? With or without TDA?

Larry Miller Toyota in Peoria, AZ

Worked using Edmunds.com data, tips from carbuyingtips.com and through my credit union MembersQuote.com account. Got several offers for trucks with options fairly close to what I wanted but ended up going with a truck that had been on the dealer lot for a while because it had the tow package installed. When I was getting e-mail offers from fleet managers most were around 500-1000$ over invoice. One dealer was willing to drop another 300$ or so but didn't have anything in stock and was having to re-route a truck that didn't have the tow package that was on the ground in CA.

Ripping off the breakdown from mataco's post:

    The truck:
2005 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab 4x4 V6 6Spd Manual Speedway Blue

    Code: MSRP/INVOICE
    DZ 200/150 - AM/FM/6CD Changer & 6 Speakers
    PT 4565/3662 - TRD Sport Pkg. #2
CF 170/104 - Carpeted Floor Mats and Door Sills
    N1 269/189 - Auto-Dimming Mirror
    Fuel 0/6
    Dest 565/565
    TDA 0/321
    Total 28014/25405

I was offered via the Internet/Fleet sales and paid 25900+TT&L. The truck was tinted by the dealer which they gave me for "free" (I'm sure I paid for it somewhere...). They didn't add any additional charges and were unwilling to drop any from the original quoted price. In the end I accepted based on the fact it was available that day and had the tow package. I didn't get remotely close to what I wanted for my trade in but had checked the offered amount against several other local dealerships and was given roughly the same trade in value everywhere. I would categorize invoice with TDA as most dealers I talked to were unwilling to negotiate that. On the copy of the actual invoice that I have it shows TDA as a line item for invoice. Overall I feel that I got a warm deal. It would have been hot had they given me a better value on my trade. Oh well, I love my new truck anyway. Now to get a clear bra for the front end and an alarm... In the meantime the truck is protected by Smith & Wesson .45 security service and the factory immobilizer.

    Nice lookin' rig!
Newby post, but I've read a lot of good info here.

Hey, what is the discount range for Taco's?
I have two dealer cost estimates; Consumer Reports & Edmunds MSRP/invoice qoutes and there's only $2K difference. Is that right? I figured closer to $5K.
It's hard to beleive a 4 cyl Tacoma is the same price as my V8 SR5 Tundra with lots of options. Any ideas?

As far as I can tell from the quotes I got the prices offered ranged from ~500$ over invoice to over 1000$ over. I personally wouldn't pay anything over roughly 5% of dealer cost. Dealer cost should be somewhere around invoice -1000$ for a 25000$ invoice vehicle. It may be lower if there are any unpublished factory to dealer allowances, rebates or incentives.

Edmunds was not very accurate on invoice prices, it may be that they haven't updated for a while. KBB.com seemed to be fairly good for price info as far as options but a bit high on the base model cost. My credit union purchasing site was pretty spot on also.

If you are making an offer on a truck or working with a salesperson, ask to see the factory invoice. Most dealers that really want to make a sale will show you if you ask. I would suggest browsing the lot with a notepad and pencil without a salesperson present to find and note what you want (stock numbers, option codes, colors, etc.) and to get an idea of what configurations are standard in your area, then contact the fleet/internet department and work through them. You tend to get better deals that way. If you have a credit union membership check with them and see if they have any dealers they do fleet or discount buying through. Read http://www.carbuyingtips.com for some good info.

Side note: Is anyone else having problems with discoloration of their dash? The dark grey upper portion of mine now has a large white spot where the color came off while I was cleaning it this weekend. There were shiny dark spots on it the day I picked it up, thought it was excess protectant or some slopped soda pop, which is why I cleaned it. It was in one of these areas where the dash discolored. The other shiny spots are still there even after a good protectant/cleaner pass. Guess I get to find out how the warranty service at my dealership is earlier than expected. Wonder how much out of pocket this will be to replace if I have to pay...
