time to time until it is fixed. Not today, not tommorrow, but maybe next week. If it start to happen with more frequency, well...you know what to do....
i know what you're saying but, it's still fun to try and get 'ol Tim going. he's one of a handful that does'nt get mad and take things so seriously. you gotta admit though that this topic has gotten a little boring. same subjects seem to be coming up over and over and over. heck, some people don't even pay attention to what others are talking about. just look at what CRYIN' RYAN is complaining about. seems like that complaint has come up quite a few times even when he was online. maybe these trucks are too complicated for some to understand. like i said before, they are machines and are going to make noises.
What? I just asked if anyone knew what this was or had any ideas. I know its a damn machine and its gonna make noise (it is very quiet though) but this damn noise wasnt normal and it was pretty loud. I work in a factory and all the machines make noise but i can tell when something is amking a noise that isnt right. I was just trying to get to the bottom of it. How is this the same damn thing that everyone else has been talking about? I havent heard anyone talk about a loud ticking noise. Ok the flare, color topic and stuff like that is old yea.
You know what yes i am actually but thats not why im angry. We will see after i get my haircut tomorrow if im in a better mood. Gotta wash the truck tomorrow too maybe that will calm me down also. STRESS im tellin you ahhhhhh
hello, does anyone know where i can get a K&N filter and a free-flowing exhaust system at a reasonable price, whether by ordering it, or anywhere in the Atlanta, Georgia region???
Does anyone have personal experience/comments on the necessity of synthetic transmission fluid? The owner's manual states to change the reg fluid at 50K? Is that too long? (couldn't find this topic in previous discussions)
does anyone know how much hp/mpg one can get from installing a Flowmaster muffler on a 4.8 litre extended cab 2wd silverado? also, how can I get around the 95mph governor?
On Saturday, I needed some supplies and headed for town. At the gate, I was greeted by a rattlesnake, western diamondback. Didn't have gun. Made the hair on my neck stand up, only 2 feet away...did not rattle.
When I got back, Christine told me she saw a small black bear down in the gulch while riding on her ATV. Max and I went looking, did not find it.
Later, after some fence building, I had some spare time. So I went to change a noisy idler pulley on my '89 Ford motorhome. The inside of the engine compartment was full of hair...rabbit or porcupine, I thought rabbit, someone else said rabbits don't climb on top of engines. Whatever it was chewed through 4 spark plug wires, various other wires including the radio coax, distributor primary, 2 vacuum hoses. Grrrrrrr! Oh well, guess I shouldn't have expected any less...ford after all. We all know what Ford stands for....Found On Ranch Dead.
As evening approached, I see a bunny come out of hiding. I grabbed my new Savage 24F, over 'n under combo gun, 12 ga/223 Rem, and followed him into some bushes. Waited, saw movement....boom...dropped in his tracks with 12 ga #8 field load. About 10 lb cotton tail.
On Sunday, I headed down into the gulch again to check on the bear. No bear, but I see a picket pin (small chipmunk like rodent) on a rock. I put the barrel selector on 12ga, blast him. Then another on a rock. Boom! Knocked off his feet like he was hit with compressed air. Dead. Then a third, popping his head out of a hole. Boom! Flipped him. Crossed the creek and heard movement in the bushes. Stopped, saw another rabbit. Problem was, I was out of #8 field load. Didn't want to waste a 00 buck shot 3 inch magnum defense round I carried for the bear. Clicked the selector to the upper barrel, 223 remington. From 12 feet away, I fired a head shot at a motionless bunny.....Missed! Bunny hops away, lives to see the another day. Later, I test fired the 223 on the range at 120 yards. Wasn't even on the paper until I adjusted the windage and elevation.
Back at the camp, my neighbor comes up and says he's got a bear up in a tree, by his trailer. I grab the firearm, and we ride our dirt bikes over. Sure enough, a mature male cub, up in a tree, mad as hell, no fear of human. He's snorting, chortling, hissing, growling, generally very upset. My neighbor locked his dog in the trailer while this was going on. Dog was barking like mad. We stood there for five or ten minutes, 20 feet away. He was so cute, you wanted to throw your arms around his neck and hug him, but when it looked like he might come down, I told David we needed to give him some room. It wouldn't be fair if we provoked him into an attack, and had to kill him. So we backed off to about 100 yards, and watched him for 1/2 hour. He finally climbed down, went behind the trailer. We followed from a distance, and then next saw him going up the hill on the other side of the canyon. He was so far away, I wondered if this was a second bear, but if not, the speed with which he scooted was a reminder...you can't outrun one.

Anyone with an opinion on going with a 2WD. My only concern is winter driving. I plan on getting a SB, but wonder what it would be like on slippery roads. V-6
hey reminder this is a family rated website. Dont want the kidds to get upset for killing peter rabbit.
Sally - what part of the US you live? Alot of snow? If you get alot of snow (blizzards) might want to get it but if its just flurries just make sure you get the locking rear differential thats all you should need.
EVER BEEN TO TEXAS?? HUNTIN SEASON IS COMIN UP AND FACTORY WONT CUT IT!! BLUE KNOWS THAT. IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR FACTORY EQUIP ON AND MEET ME HERE FOR SOME OFF ROAD FUN....BUT IF YOU KEEP THE OEM TIRES ON,YOU BETTER PLAN ON STAYIN A LONG LONG TIME. YOU WONT GET 50 YDS BEFORE YOURE STUCK.TIRES AND WINCH BABY......OR YOURE WALKIN!!! PS.DRIVIN SKILL AINT GOT NUTHIN TO DO WITH IT PPS. sorry for the caps lock.lol
you are correct in a way......experience and skill are important. however, even the best mudders know that there is no susitute for good tires and a winch. go huntin for 10 days 150 miles from nowhere, get stuck once and youll learn. oem tires will work on the hwy, county, and loggin roads, but where there aint no road............i guess you just gotta know what im talkin about to understand. by the way, 8 of the top ten record whitetails have been shot in TEXAS! and we dont hunt armadillos........we race 'em!!
Interesting about the armadillos. We have kangaroos (kinda an inside joke has to do with deer signs) here in indiana we box em. Im not a hunter i fish though.
Yep your right you need the right equipment for the job. At first when you were talking about the tires i thought u were just getting some "sport" tires not ones for a particular use.
I don't know if this was covered before, but here goes. I've got a '99 Z71 1500 LS, 4.8L, 3.7 gears, off-road pkg., auto-trac, ect. I love the truck, but there is something that's annoying the hell out of me and I was wondering if anyone has come across it. It feels like it shifts into overdrive as soon as I hit 50-55 mph, regardless of whether I trying to accelerate onto the highway or not. Plus when it's there, it takes an act of congress to get it out without it jumping two gears. It seems okay driving around town (less than 50 mph). It jumps out of overdrive as needed. As soon as I get it over 50, it falls asleep. I don't even bother with cruise control anymore because it revs like crazy to keep the speed constant and it looks like I'm driving like an a**hole. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be appreciated. My dealer says its' basically working as designed and there's not much he can do right now.
A lot of discussion about exhaust. Have never looked under truck till today when mail blew right to the middle. Was surprised to see such huge muffler, has anyone read why such a large system is used on such a small chassis (4.8). On model have noticed two dual cats feeding into a single pipe. Seems GM could offer a good dual system and cash in on all the after markets being substituted. Any tech people on board know why no duals offered by factory. On older trucks there was usually an option.
We get our share of snow here in Western PA, but nothing like years ago. I'm glad to hear people recommend 2WD. What exactly will the locking differential do for me on bad roads?
I grew up in western PA and we always had 2WD trucks. Never got stuck even on the logging roads when we went deer hunting. Did use chains a couple of times, though.
Locking differential on 2WD will lock 2 rear wheels together if one starts to slip. For the money it's a good investment and should keep you from getting stuck if you drive in an appropriate manner. I'd also throw a little extra weight in the bed for winter. A couple of buckets of sand works great. It provides weight and you can toss some under the tires if you ever do get stuck.
mine acts somewhat similar. In the Ohio/West Virginia area that I currently live there are a lot of hills and I'm constantly downshifting (well, the auto constantly downshifts). The Hypertech programmer allows you to adjust shift point and although I have not done this yet, I think I'm going to. It takes quite a bit of throttle to shift from 4th to 3rd and I want to change it. Can also change speed limiter, adjust for tires, etc., lets you do lots of things, but it cost quite a bit...
Sorry I'm so late in answering you regarding your question on changing the oil when it is hot or cold, but I have not had time to read these postings for several days. I never change my oil when it is cold as it does not drain well. I want as much of the old oil and suspended particles as is possible to drain out and not to contaminate the new oil and filter. I always change it soon after the engine has been at operating temperature and I give it plenty of time to drip as opposed to being in a hurry like the dealers and lube shops that tend to put the plug back in while a small stream is still coming out. Of course they want to save that extra five minutes and get to the next job and the owner pays for it. On a scale of 0-10 with 0 being cold and 10 being hot I try for the range of 6-8. This is just a guess on my part. But the point is always do it between hot and a warm-hot, never cold or just warm. Bob
I've had the same experience. 5.3L, xtnd cab, 4X4, 4.10 rearend, 285 tires. Inclines and cruise just don't do well together. I've also got the HPP III, but since the truck seem to accelerate and shift OK getting up to cruising speed I didn't think about being able to adjust anything that would help. The problem seems to be the cruise not adjusting and adding enough acceleration until it bogs too much, then it downshifts in order to maintain speed. There were other complaints a few months ago. Maybe this one should go to the dealer, but if GM hasn't updated some sort of computer programming for the cruise we'll probably get the standard "it works the way it was designed" answer.
I agree with you that those cheap ramps are not necessary to change the oil, filter and to lube these trucks. I think a more safe method is to use two 4 inch thick solid concrete blocks. Just drive the truck's front wheels up on them, set the emergency brake and go to work. The resulting slight elevation of the front end gives better oil drainage than on the level since the drain plug is on the back side of the oil pan. Bob
wish I could do that with my car - what a pain, not enough space.
gnipper, I have the same set up as you except the 3.73 rear end. Haven't reprogrammed the tranny yet, but would think this would help.
BTW, ordered a thermo from truckperformance.com and they screwed it up. Would not recommend them to anybody as now I'm getting the run around. Anybody know if there is a electric fan available for the new style Silverado's - can't find one...
I cannot get into the site to view your photos on the spray-in bedliner color/fading comparison. I will appreciate it if you will post the results in writing here. I am quite interested in a spray-in liner, probably a gray one and I too, have heard that they fade. How about it? It probably will not make a difference as I will probably purchase a liner regardless if they fade or not, but I would like to know what others are experiencing with their spay-ins. I will then be prepared for it. Thanks. Bob
Thanks for the paintsaver website. It is of interest to me and I will probably use it for a purchase. Another example of great information that is provided on this site. Thanks to all. Bob
medium gray in my old 76 I sold. I had it about 2 years. It did fade, but Armor All brought back the color for the most part - I think you need to keep after it. (This fading was in the Arizona desert sun - extreme condition.) However, I had some bathroom cleaner leak out of a container and stain the liner a green-yellowish color in a few spots - I could never get the stains out. I don't know if a drop in liner would do the same. Good luck.
exterior rear door handles - 3500 heavy duty. http://www.wieck.com/public/*wieck_search Select Silverado if you don't go right to this page. Looks like only the crew cabs have them.
Nope its still there only rattles over big bumps. I know exactly where its coming from i might just try and fix it myself its not worth losing the truck for a day for a BS job like that.
I don't remember which post you mention the rattle in or its exactly location, but if it is in the dash area and and you are going to look into it your self the main trim piece around the gauges, stereo/AC and steering column are very easy to remove. This gives a lot of access to look around for your rattle if you suspect it is in that area. I believe there may be two screws from the bottom of the panel under the steering column and the rest are held on by about 18 to 20 spring clips. Its been a couple of months. When I'm home this weekend I can locate the exact instructions and fax or scan them for you.
actually...from the dr. install radio swap instructions i got...the main dash panel removes with a couple good tugs. they recommend starting above the left most a/c vent and prying down and away. once this pops...move across the top of the panel prying each section loose - no screws. see this website at:
Is it just me, or are there others that don't care for the chrome backed mirrors on the Silverado/Sierra? If I can scrape together a sufficient down payment, I'm planning on ordering a 2001 Sierra. I've pretty much settled on the gold exterior with the neutral interior, but the chrome mirrors and body side molding look lousy with the gold. I can change the molding to black, but what to do about those mirrors? Is it possible to get a good paint job to cover the chrome? I'd paint it to match the body color. Anybody ever have chrome painted?
Greg: I have not yet decided on a muffler system. Your Magnaflow single in-dual out system seems to be the way to go--but I want it to be on the quiet side, as you did. When your windows are up, can you hear the duals at idle? Revved up? I'm asking because I took a drive with a guy who had a new Dodge with a similar set up but he had Glasspak mufflers and it was LOUD in the cab.
Odenmeyer: I still have the stock system, so you must have me confused with someone else. That "droning" or cab resonance is a real concern however.
Sally: If you are undecided between 2WD or 4WD definatley go with the 4WD. It will cost you a little more up front and your mileage will suffer marginally, but unless you live in Florida or Hawaii, you will have no worries in the winter or, just trying to drive out of those awkward places we all find ourselves in ocassionally. Actually, I wouldn't buy anything but 4WD even if I lived in Florida! My $.02
Extended Warranty: I tend to agree that it is not a good deal at the price most of these dealersd want for it. But two years ago I had a Chrysler Town and Country that the dealer wanted $1800.00 for a 7/70 plan. I declined and went on line to shop around and through a link posted on "dejanews" I found a Chrysler dealer in Oklahoma that sold me the EXACT same plan for $575.00!!! I'm not kidding. You can see the mark-up involved here. Too damn bad I ended up selling that van to buy this Silverado. I added it on the price I wanted and did end up getting my money back.
