This forum was a great help in buying so I though I'd share my numbers.

    This is all South Florida.
I bought a Copper 2015 CR-V EX-L No Navi and new tag OTD for 28,875 from Delray Honda. Dont have the breakdown in front of me but it was about 25,900something for the car. This included cargo tray, protection and a pin stripe that I made them remove. Sales tax is around 6% for a certain amount. All I really focused on with anyone was the OTD price. Sally at Delray was great to work with and made it easy, no haggling once I came in.

Other prices negotiated online OTD (car):
    Hendrick-29,500 (26,691)
    Autonation Hollywood- 31,111 (28,166)
    Autonation Miami - 30,200 (27,268)
    Aventura Honda - 29,612 (26,714)
    Brickell Honda - 29,500
    Holman Honda - 29,039 (26,311)

Rick Case would not negotiate and the online guy thought I was crazy for asking for below invoice so I went in. The first number they gave me was in the 31K range OTD. When I told them what I wanted to pay and what I got from other dealers they said they couldnt come anywhere near that price.

Braman Miami would not answer my emails, only send automated messages. I went in and they could match the 29,039 that Holman gave. Really didnt like the salesman and had bad experiences there with my MILs car so didnt pursue any further with them.

Anybody in the Greater Washington DC Metro (VA/DC/MD) area bought an EX-L recently? I currently own a 2008 EX AWD that I bought new back then, today, I'm thinknig about upgrading to a 2015 EX or EX-L. Right now, I'm trending towards the EX-L but I'm seeing greater discounts/incentives on the EX especially this week for Memorial Day weekend

Here's an example of two of the lowest quotes (both from MD dealers) out of a total of 8 quotes so far that I have received from dealers in both MD and VA.

    AWD EX
    Sales Price 24,520.00
    Freight 880.00
    Sales Price + Freight 25,400.00
    Dealer Installed Options: None
    Processing/Doc Fee 299.00
    SUTOTAL 25,699.00
    VA Tax (4.05%) 1,028.70
    Tags/Title (Existing) 51.00
    TOTAL OTD 26,778.70

Price last week before the "Memorial Day" sale was $638 higher.

    AWD EX-L
    Sales Price 26,392.00
    Freight 880.00
    Sales Price + Freight 27,272.00
    Dealer Installed Options: None
    Processing/Doc Fee 300.00
    SUTOTAL 27,572.00
    VA Tax (4.05%) 1,116.67
    Tags/Title (Existing) 51.00
    TOTAL OTD 28,739.67

Appaerntly incentives for EX-L aren't very good; compared to last week, this week it's just a $100 additional discount, unlike the $638 discount for the EX from the prior week.

How do these numbers look? These are just "initial first round quotes" as I've just only started receiving the numbers in today. From the collective members here, how much lower do you think I can get for the EX-L? Is the EX-L worth the differences over the EX? I'm still torn between those two trims and my current '08 CR-V is an EX, and back then when I bought mine, I had 22 quotes! LOL!

I have bought five Honda vehicles in Maryland over the past few years. I have tried most of the dealerships. I always end up at Criswell. Two to avoid, in my opinion, are College Park and Ourisman as they seem to play too many games. I have also received good pricing from Sport, O'Donnell and Norris. However, Criswell is better for me logistically.

When I deal with Criswell, I tell them what I want to pay and negotiate from than number. Essentially, I take invoice less hold back less all incentives, customer and dealer. I then add 2-3 percent for profit. That is my initial offer. One caveat, before I make my offer I check the many prices paid sites to see if anyone is paying less. If they are, that indicates there is a hidden dealer rebate. If so, I adjust my price downward. I tell them the price I will pay includes the fake dealer doc fee.

I have always ended up withing a few hundred dollars over my initial offer. I do not think it provides much benefit to continue shopping in the hope I may save a few more dollars at another dealer.

As a game, I never accept a price until I actually walk away even going out the door. At that point, if Criswell has not countered, I feel somewhat assured I have received their best offer. At that point, if I want to buy, I go back in and make the deal. If not, there is always someone who will take my money.

I consider myself a savvy buyer, I have worked in cost accounting for several decades. Criswell has never disappointed me as to pricing. I did have one bad experience with one of their F&I sales staff. The guy tried to slip some insurance stuff into the payment. No big deal, as it was easily spotted. I suppose most F&I people are questionable.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Two of my lowest quotes so far are actually from Sport and Criswell with the latter being less by about $100. My current CR-V actually came from Sport and I have a good contact there (and have sent lots of referrals to him over the years). O'Donell and Norris are too far from me since I'm in NoVA.

From the numbers you posted the Crv exl model is your best deal at 2079 below dealers invoice minus the 300 doc fee charge.

EX model is only 639 below invoice. Most dealers have more EXL models so they will discount that model more.

Use your exl price to your advantage this weekend. Take back the dealers 300 plus doc fee. That should be very do-able for the sale. That will put you over 2k below invoice for a exl. Otherwise its still a very good deal if you just buy vehicle.

Use dealers like @ken117 mentioned plus these dealerships if there not to far from you.

In MD ................Pohanka, Shockley, Jim Coleman , Browns, Hendricks

    In VA.........Autonation , Chantilly ,

As far as I'm concerned : Pohanka , Criswell , O'Donnell's , Chantilly, Shockley, and Sport Honda are the go to dealers in this area.

Good luck your on your way to a great deal.

Thanks for the tip. Realistically, how much lower do you think I might be able to go the EX-L? Another $600? More or less?

Chantilly which is closest to me is actually the highest (!) at $30.6K OTD although the sales guy did say he's willing to beat any price - but wonder if that's just talk? LOL.

I got my 2015 CRV Touring from Chantilly this year and I have to say the whole group is amazing. No pressure everything was waiting for us to sign...no surprises and he beat my best price. And they had the blue color that was hard to find. Our sales guy was the best we have ever dealt with. We drove from Alexandria to see him.  Hope this helps...

@hubcaps - Thanks for the info re Chantilly, appreciate it.

How's the Touring coming along? Are you experiencing the vibration issue that other CR-V owners have been talking about (which Honda has admitted)?
  • hubcapshubcaps Member Posts: 23
Yes we are...sometimes it is bad and sometimes not as bad but you can always feel it. I feel it is worse on the passenger side

That's the one thing that worries me going forward; it's not a matter if the car will have vibrations but rather how bad it will be? Based on my understanding, seems it only happens at idle when you're stopped and at certain RPMs? No issues when in motion?

  • hubcapshubcaps Member Posts: 23
That is correct. It only happens when I have the foot on the brake at like a stop sign or red light. Does not happen in park or while I am driving. We have had car since Jan 2015 other then the vibration issue it is a good stable drive. This is our first SUV and size is perfect for us. We tried alot of other SUVs. We also did extensive research online.

300, 600,800, dollars more anything is possible. If you play the end of the month game pitting dealers against each other in the price wars.

Just wondering how did you came up with the $2079 below dealers invoice for the EXL per above? I went back and checked through my numbers:

This is not counting in TT&L, proc, fee, taxes, etc. Just sale price + freight;.

    My lowest quote was:
    Sale price: 26,392.00
    Freight: 880.00
    Sale + Freight = 27,272.00

    Invoice per Edmunds:
    Base: 27,592.00
    Freight 880.00
    Total = 28,472.00

    Difference of $1200

Or did I mess up somewhere in my spreadsheet?

    CRV vs Forester.

What persuaded you to Honda. Did you find the Subaru had to much road noise in the cabin? Honda has a nicer interior.

Did not test drive a subaru....we were in them at the DC car show did not feel it was for us. We drove Rav 4, hyundai tuscon and santa fe, Kia sorrento and sportage, acura rdx (whatever the small suv is) ford focus, mazda c5? And we drove some regular cars as well civic, optima and sonata---which we have a 2007 currently.

I will say we recently went away and rented a 2015 ford flex. ...the exterior design is terrible it looks like a box but the inside and the ride was surpringly very nice. My older parents liked it too...easy in and out

I'm looking to purchase my first CR-V in the next few months and am starting to research.  I had a couple questions for the experts here:

    1. What sites do you use to find reliable info as far as determining what the dealers true cost might be.  For example breaking down invoice price and holdback plus other current incentives?  Any links would be greatly appreciated.

    2. When I actually start negotiating with the dealer, are there certain fees/costs that are basically not negotiable or is pretty much everything up for negotiation?

    3. What kinds of specific tactics do you use when haggling the price?  I really appreciated the post from Ken117 above as that gives me a great starting point, but what do you do if/when the dealer starts pushing back saying things like they would be losing money or that they can't go below $xxx price etc?

This will be my first time negotiating a new car deal so I am as green as they come.  Any help or tips are greatly appreciated!

    Ah, got it.

What surprised me was Hendricks came in the highest (over $31K OTD) and is now the lowest after they agreed
to price match another dealer. Their cars do come bloated with a lot of dealer added options (in italics) which they now will include for "free".

    Sales Price 25,759.11
    Freight 880.00
    Sales Price + Freight 26,639.11
    Dealer Installed Options
    Pin Stripes 0
    Wheel Locks 0
    NitroFill 0
    Splash Guard 0
    Door Edge Guards 0
    Cargo Tray 0
    Processing/Doc Fee 599.00
    SUBTOTAL 27,238.11
    VA Tax (4.05%) 1,103.14
    Tags/Title (Existing) 58.75
    TOTAL OTD 28,400.00

1- Edmunds, Nada.com, KBB.com are all good source info on pricing, reviews, and incentives/ rebates for all vehicles.

2- 99% of the time dealers doc fee charge wont be removed of the bill of sale. So you compensate this charge by knowing each dealers doc fee charge then subtract it off of your target price to buy making that charge a wash.

3- Click on my user name @brian125 then go to my home page and click on my 3529 comments. Read thru my posting on how to buy a car and how to make the best possible deal. I beat to the same drum over and over on how to make your lowest possible deal on any vehicle . Once you have a good idea on buying you can ask me or the forum how to close your deal.

Remember having a good target price and getting as many dealerships involved helps you make the best possible deal. Buying at months end or quarter helps get better pricing. Supply and demand . Time of the year are big factors in pricing.

Read on my friend. Educate yourself in this slim ball car business.

    Hi Smackldog
I recently bought EXL model for 26082 including freight in Southern California. What is this Doc fee 599? I just verified my invoice, dealer added only $80 as processing fee for me. Since LA tax rate is 9% my OTD came to $28826. Since you have many accessories 26639 is a reasonable price. but try to negotiate on the Doc fee.

The doc fee is limited by law to $80 in CA, but other states have no such limits, which leads to the $599 fees that are common. A bit of a shock, but good negotiating should mitigate that cost.

doc fee is 80 dollars. your deal is 1276 below invoice. A good start use this price to lower deal with nearby dealers. Memorial day weekend did not start yet. Let this weekend play out to see what dealers will sell lower.

Processing fee is also known as documentation fee aka "paperwork fee". You're lucky that in CA it's state capped at $80. In VA, there is no cap or limit, so dealers are free to charge whatever they can get away for "paperwork". In MD, it used to be $99 capped but over the years, its risen now up to $300. Each state varies.

Dealer number one doesn't appear to be adding any junk fees to the price. That's good - the real question then is how does that sales number (before the fees) compare to invoice, TMV and other reports here?

Dealer number two - adding rebates to their price when they have no idea if you are eligible for those rebates is just a way to lure unsuspecting buyers in. And then they want to add a 15% fee on top for processing their profit? Makes you wonder what other kinds of tricks they will try to pull on you. Get a lot of bad vibes from your description about them.

on this memorial day, got a call from a Socal Dealer for an unbelievable base price 23890 for EXL. He sent me a mail also with OTD price of 26500. Unfortunately I have bought the car 10 days back with a OTD price of 28826. I don't know whether he will honor his price or not but I am very sad for buying 10 days before memorial day.

The So. California market is a ruined marketplace and as cutthroat as they come. I don't think the stores care one bit about customer satisfaction and the survey results show. It's dog eat dog and the sales and management turnover is constant. I wouldn't be so sure "something" wouldn't have changed once you got to that store.

Stores aren't about to lose money on a sale. They have to make it up somewhere.

I recently purchased a 2015 CRV EX FWD in Kona Coffee Metallic

    Sale Price: $24,207
    Document fee: $80
    Sales tax(9%): $2185.84
    M.V.S.C. Fee: $29
    License/Registration: $259
    Tire fees: $8.75

OTD: $26,769.59 (0% financing, memorial weekend special)

I purchased the car from Michael Skierka at Galpin Honda in Mission Hills, CA, over the Memorial Day weekend. They were offering 0% financing, 6 free oil changes and a lifetime power train warranty. The 0% financing was enough to get me in the door.

"isellhondas" is right about SoCal dealers. I had been emailing dealers since March trying to find an EX AWD in Kona or Urban Titanium and it was non existent in the so cal area. I was dead set on those colors. I know limiting one's options isn't the best way to got to get that rock bottom price.

Every dealer I contacted was trying to push their existing inventory on me. I visited a couple to talk pricing, even though I knew they didn't have what I wanted. I got quotes that ranged from sticker to $500 under and everyone had additional dealer add-ons.

I tried TrueCar and got quoted at $26,200. Within seconds I got calls from 2 dealers and a 3rd emailed with an offer of $26,100. No one had the car I wanted. I also thought I could do much better on the price, going off what others had purchased theirs for but, not in SoCal, where everything is artificially inflated.

Two months later and constant emails to various dealers I gave up on my dreams of passive AWD. I was planning on moving to Oregon in the future and I was hoping to have this car for a long time.

With Memorial Day looming I reached out again. I received various responses about impending sales and deals, but no one would give me details. I kept getting, "Come on in for test drives and check out existing inventories! We'll meet or beat any competitor's advertised price." I was sick of playing the game!

Then Mike Skierka from Galpin responded with a decent price, way lower than any others. He answered every question in my initial inquiry, in detail. He was even the first person to give me an out the door price. Plus, they had my color. I was tempted to try shopping that number, but decided not to waste my time. It was lower than TrueCar, an auto broker's quote I received and some of the poster's here. I wish I could trade some sunny days for your east coast prices and tax rates, lol.

In the end Mike was non-pushy, straight-up and easy going. I wasn't pressured into anything I didn't want and I left with a new car...minus a key fob. One of the two had gone missing. Mike gave it to me in writing and a couple of days later dropped off the missing key at my work.

Thank you guys on this forum for giving me the tools to help me purchase a car. My advice for others is to start by researching, check out dealers and test drive to narrow down your choices, email everyone and for the love of --- pick up the phone and talk to the sales guy/manager. You can save a lot of time by doing that. Waiting until the end of the month can lower offers, but inventories may not be as stocked. That was a constant issue for me.

Sorry for the long post, lol.

I think its a very good price

in texas people are paying 2k more for that car (higher taxes though)

The same goes for California. People are paying more for them here. Getting the lowest price quote is important. That'll get you in the door. But, make sure that you also negotiate finance rates, dealer add-ons, warranties (VSC's) and any accessories that you may want before you set foot through that door.

Your OTD price isn't always set in stone.

Wow. I'm not having any luck. From San Jose, CA. Searched in San Jose, Dublin, Palo Alto.

Looking for 2015, EXL, AWD, no navigation, in white exterior, black interior.

Best deal I've gotten was $31k out the door/invoice price including everything.

Am I doing something wrong? What can I do to improve my chances on getting a better deal?

I checked from local dealer in Columbia, SC with set of wheel locks, Tint in the rear windows, stripe on both sides.. (no oil changes, no seasons mats, no cargo tray and no splash guards). He is offering for 24600 before taxes and doc fee. What do you guys think of price?

Well, you could buy a different car that isn't in short supply and high demand.

Actually 4WD CRV's are a tough sell in CA and most stores probably have no use for them. Do you REALLY need 4WD? Another thing, if you are locked in to a certain color and a store happens to have one they can command a higher price.

Just got proposed $27,500 sales price for an EXL AWD. I'm in California, specifically San Jose. Taking into account 10% fees and such, price out the door is around $29,700. For this market in the Silicon Valley should I bite or keep trying to lower?

You can try offering anything until you get tired of putting yourself through all of this.

I am curious of why you want a 4WD when you live in the Bay Area? Why pay for something you'll never need
unless you go over Donner Pass in the winter.

I'm always surprised that people think you only need 2WD in SoCal - I'd like it for going to Mammoth. NoCal means Tahoe and all those onerous Cali chain laws. It's not all a beach. Well, I had fun tooling around the backroads one December at Death Valley in my Subaru. That was kind of beachy. B)

Getting a good deal on an AWD in SoCal is tough when dealers only have 1-3 in stock. The sales guys kept telling me that no one needs or wants AWD in Los Angeles. Well, since no one wants the AWD Touring you got there then I'll take it for $28,000 OTD ;) No takers. I don't see why Honda doesn't make every CRV AWD. It's a FWD vehicle until you need the AWD and then it kicks in.

As a native So. Calif person I can say I NEVER once had a use for 4WD.

Now we live in the Seattle area where it can sometimes snow a bit. We have had our 2003 CRV EX 4WD for 12 years now and I can think of one time I was gald I had 4WD although I could have gotten by without it.

    But, that's me.

Car dealers order what sells and they don't order inventlry that few people heve a use for. As simple as that.
