@ fintail -- yes a 1952 Mercedes 300 Cabriolet B (I don't refer to these as Adenauers because I kind of think the closed cars are more appropriate to the term).

And now for the surprise. Can you tell something about the engine that is in it? (engine was modified somewhat to get it into the car).

  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,158
Is that a 300SL engine, tilted upright?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yep. It's a 1957 300SL engine, either from a long-gone coupe or GW. The intake manifold is missing, as is the dry-sump system, so the engine has lost value.

Still, this is a rare case where the engine is worth as much as the car itself!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,641
Wow, that's pretty crazy. I wonder who did that, and when.

Adenauer rode in a cabrio, that's enough for me :)

For reference, early Adenauers had dual carbs, and looked like this:

    Later models gained FI:

Good mystery car. At least I didn't go "Of course!" when I read the answer. Never would have gotten it...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I had a Gullwing guy look at it and he said it wasn't the right one. Then I looked at a photo of a "real" one, and it's not a 300SL manifold. It's probably a manifold from a later fuel-injected 300S.

Also remarkably out of shape on that turn.

Oh, now I understand. Quite a mashup of valuable and not-so-valuable parts, it seems.

It's an odd duck. These are hard to price. I'm thinking the whole package is $50K for the car and $50K for the engine, so $100K on a good day. If that engine were totally correct and running, it would be $150K.

The Jensen is an SV8 - they made about twenty in a new factory in Liverpool in the period 1999 - 2002 but the operation went out of business thereafter.

Previous Jensens in the 50's/60s had been made by a different company in West Bromwich in the West Midlands - I think this was just a revival of the name not the company.

Because of those wheel covers, I'll say that Mercury is a '54.
I've seen gasoline prices displayed with .9 and .2 but never before with .5 and .4

No one wants to take a shot at my new wheels in the new photo?

If you mean the little Avatar shot in the right hand corner, no offense but that looks pretty generic, could be any number of current vehicles. I couldn't even tell ya if it's a sedan or an SUV.

Bingo! A nimble little thing with a 13:1 compression ratio.
In the near future the 3s will have the spark controlled compression ignition. That will be very interesting.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,799
nice cars. Should be due for a redesign soon too. That and the 6 have been around for a while.

Yes, '53. It's been sitting in a barn for 42 years, and it's still there as far as I know. There are other cars in the barn, but they are all pre-war or too obvious for you guys.

I had a 77 Aspen with the floor shift. Was a very good car. Put over 100k plus before selling it. It had the slant six which was basically bullet proof.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    When I lived in Colorado, I had a '65 Valiant with a factory 4-speed and a Slant 6.

A buddy of mine owned an Aspen wagon w a stick. I was surprised to learn there was such a thing. Like every other car he owned was bare-bones and a real lemon.

Hmmm, but it doesn't have parking lights within the bumper under the headlights. Their absence plus the location of the side trim tells me to put 2 chips on 1978.

Along with a different grille header and signal lamps. 1976 and '77 were one design, '78 and '79 another design, and '80 different again. Check your source Andy, it's not a '76.
