Congrats, juice.
Ed
I have to agree with Ed - an H6 VDC wagon would do the trick.

Loosh, Cool videos; kids enjoyed 'em, too.

The H6 would be the sedan, actually. Fitz has VDCs for under $28k. When the $750 incentive returns, that would be about $27k, a deal. The non-VDC H6 sedan would be about $25k, hard to pass up on one of those.
Fitz has one Highlander at $28k for a 4x2 V6, too pricey, at least for now. Add 4x4, fuggedaboudit.
We'll wait to see the next Forester. If it is Legacy-based, or at least usefully bigger, we'll probably get that because it's one of very few choices that we both like.
She likes the Maxima, Altima, Camry, Avalon, Highlander, and Forester. I like the Odyssey, MPV, and basically all the higher-end Subies.
For a $25k or so price, I'd currently lean towards an H6 sedan or a 2004 Forester Turbo Premium.

Congratulations to you both. Hope the kid approves too. Of course, you could go my route and buy a nice comfortable car - a Subaru Outback
Cheers
Graham
If the 2004 Forester comes out in March 2003, following the current trend, we could wait. The 2nd would only be 8 months old by then.

Get a wagon anyway and remove the rearview mirror maybe she won't notice back there. :-D

Dave: hehe, great advice.

I'd almost rather get her a Legacy L sedan and then save our cash for a WRX STi or SVX to replace the Miata as our toy.
-juice
Juice, it almost sounds as though you should give her your Forester, sell the Miata and the 626 and use the proceeds as down payment on some WRX variant. Oh, the choices!
Ed
(edit: bad cut/paste)
Now what to do about a new vehicle, Oh the choices, I am glad that my wife loves the Tiotan as much as I do made it easy to pick a new car.
Cheers Pat.
But this is the wife's car and she has veto power on my recommendations. The Legacy and Outback wagons were vetoed, plain and simple. The Forester was exempted from the "no-wagon" rule simply because she doesn't think it looks the part.
I tried the "you take the Forester" approach but she didn't find it fair that I always get the new car. We will keep 3 cars in the fleet, no question about that, so the 626 will go but the Miata will stay until Patti tells us the SVX roadster is on the way.
I find the Legacy sedan handsome, too. Very distinctive C-pillar, sleek design. I'm just not a fan of sedans in general. But the wife is. She's coming from a V6 so the H6 is a natural choice, though she wants a 5 speed, so it would be a compromise for her (no manual) and for me (small cargo capacity).
Ugh. Bring on the Blitzen, I say. She loves power and it would be worth the non-wagon compromise to me.
If not, a turbo Forester would be different enough for us.

I just thought I would join the Subaru frenzy. My wife and I just purchased a used 2000 Subaru Legacy GT Limited sedan with manual transmission. It currently has 8,800 miles (low!), and has the Rio Red finish with tinted windows and a rear spoiler.
The car is currently sitting in our garage. Thursday we will have an Invizibra kit installed to prevent the paint and lamps from being chipped up. It's been absolute torture letting it sit for the last week, but I'd rather wait until the Invizibra is installed before we take it out. What's worse is my area has received a ton of snow in the last week, and the Legacy would have been perfect in it.
This is our first Subaru. Until now we've been Honda and Toyota fans. Any advice for maintenance and care of the Legacy sedans? Also, the manual mentioned you can't use snow chains on the GT models because of clearance issues. Will cables fit instead?

My wife and I will probably do a bit of boarding and snow shoeing this winter and in winters to come, and there are times where you are legally required to use chains, cables, or studded tires to drive through the canyons. Although we usually avoid the canyons during severe storms, it would be nice to have a set of cables in case we unexpectedly get hit with a storm while we're frolicking in the white stuff.
Congrats, it's a rare find.

Cheers Pat.
You'll be happy to know that Subaru has re-introduced red into the L, GT, and GT Limited lineup for 2002, but it's a metallic red called Regatta Red Pearl.
Like the 2000 GTs, though, I've never seen a red 2002 on the lot or on the road. Subaru just seems to be averse to red cars. Too bad since they look great in that color. I'm sure you can order it in color you want, and you may be able to score a great deal since demand is a little low right now. My local dealer was certainly willing to negotiate.
Delighted to hear the good news. May both you and your wife enjoy comfortable months ahead.
Don
Pat, like I said, I really like the BBS style wheels on one. All GT's look more like German cars than traditional Subarus.

I saw several Soobs in Regatta Red yesterday while shopping for an LL Bean, and it is indeed a nice color. I narrowed down my choices to Black, Regatta Red, and Timberline Green, and ended up going with Timberline even though it's the same color as my first Outback. I had them both parked in the driveway tonight, and it was kind of funny.
OK, so you think the Aztec is ugly? Today, I saw a white Aztec with a black hood deflector, and it actually makes the "thing" look even worse. That owner must like homely looking cars!

This is probably the best solution for the rodent attackers which fancy Subaru wiring. My wife turned it up amongst some American Recipes. Beats me how an English born librarian, researching cookery from Australia, found it, but it might be kmclean's perfect Subaru repair
SQUIRREL CAKES
3 squirrels
2 tablespoons bread crumbs
1 onion, fine-chopped
1 tablespoon catsup
1/2 cup mashed potatoes
Parboil squirrels in salt water for about 15 minutes, then remove all the good meat. Grind bits of meat and blend with the bread crumbs,
onions, catsup, and mashed potatoes. Mix well. Shape into small flat cakes and saute' in hot bacon fat until well browned. Serves 4
Cheers

Uh huh. right. Pass the Rally Bread.

On Dasher, on Dancer, On Donner and Vixen!
On Comet, On Cupid, On Prancer, On......
um.....Heh heh, get 'em to fill in the blank, dammit.
I'm not too picky. Here is what I want:
* AWD
* ABS + 4 discs
* traction + stability control
* heated leather (easier to clean she says)
* huge moonroof
* 200+ horsepower
* 20+ mpg on regular
* wagon bodystyle, SUV look
* 3 rows of seats a plus
* 5 or 6 speed manual, or at least 5 speed auto
* $30k street price
So really nothing in the market today meets all these criteria. The VDC is close, and the Audi S6 Avant for about half price would work.

juice - I think it's just a matter of bad timing. Subaru will most likely come out with something to meet those needs. Just not in your timeframe. I have several friends that would've bought a Subaru minivan if one had been available.
It's funny how people perceive things differently. When my wife was shopping, she didn't like the Forester because she thought it looked like a squashed SUV. I think she was impressed with it though, following Ed in the hills of NJ/PA. :-)

Thanks, Dennis. It helped that I was familiar with almost all of the roads we traveled. I actually think that the Forester looks a bit like a 2/3-scale FJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser. I actually like the Forester's looks from a rear three-quarter view, and I prefer the '98-00's taillamps to the 01-02's that spill onto the liftgate. Overall I did not buy the Forester for its looks though it, like the WRX, grows on me.

We rented a Montana in Orlando this summer, and we liked the space, but it didn't help that the "check air bag" light came on and it wasn't a very competent package overall.
She doesn't like huge vehicles, so something space efficient is critical.
