Don’t be so quick to pat yourself on the back. Here’s why:

If you had a “bad meter” you would have more than likely lost All service not just one line side of service. As you pointed out in quotes it was a broken meter lug not the meter itself.

OK folks since nobody caught my “technical mistake”, I guess I’ll have to correct myself. Here goes:

If you lose one side of your electrical service like the @jipster did you WILL NOT lose all the breakers on the left or right side of the breaker box. You will however lose lose every other breaker on the left AND right side of the box. This is because of how ALL breaker boxes are wired internally.

If the breaker box wasn’t wired like this, if you lost all breakers, either on the left or right side of the box (when you lost one line side of service) you would not be able to get 220 VAC on adjacent vertical breakers (left or right side of breaker box) when you connect a double breaker, for let’s say, an AC or an electric range.

I hope I didn’t confuse you guys but I had to point this out or I’d feel guilty about this forever.

So, while he was here, inquiries were made about installing a ceiling fan in the guest bedroom. The electrician texts me last week about being free and he can come and he’ll need x y z and charge $375. I looked in the attic over the garage and came to the conclusion that he could easily tap into existing wiring and run through one tight spot about 2 feet to get to the center of that room’s ceiling. Wouldn’t be tough. He starts talking about another switch and cutting into walls ….. oh no. So I send a video showing exactly what I’m saying, giving measurements, where to run the wire, etc. He says “I’m going to have to come take a look but…” and I gave up. After doing that much homework for him, I decided I might as well just do it myself. So I did. Took me like 2 hrs and I spent $80 on a couple of new tools for myself in the process.
And folks wonder why I like to do things myself. Plus, as you found out it’s a great way to collect tools you don’t already have.

We’re about wrapping up some concrete work that a contractor wanted 2500 bucks to do and we had already cutout the old concrete and removed it. 10 bags of 80 pound concrete mix (just under 5 bucks a bag with my discount) and not even 2 hours work and all we have to do now is clean up. Too bad we had all the tools but sometimes you win or lose depending on how bad you wanted new tools.

I agree that $2,500 seems a little high, but I think you are downplaying the amount of work involved. You go to HomeDepot, you load 800 pounds of concrete mix onto the cart, stand in line to check out, then load 800 pounds into your truck. Assuming you have a truck (which I do). Then you get home, unload 800 pounds, mix the concrete by hand (very few of us have a concrete mixer). Finish the surface by hand, clean up all of your tools. There is no way I could do that in 2 hours, and I rather doubt you can either.

And I no longer do that much heavy lifting either. In my youth, an 80 pound bag of concrete mix was child's play. These days, not so.

What I tend to do these days is to hire some semi-skilled labor, and then closely supervise the work. I pay a guy $100 for 5 or 6 hours work, I get a good result, and my back isn't aching afterwards.

You are 100% correct. Depending on how your breakers are stabbed in it can certainly seem like one “side” goes. I know when it happened at my Moms every breaker that was vital for the lights, fridge etc were stabbed in on the bad leg.

When I said 2 hours I was talking about the actual time it took to do the job not the pickup of the material which my son did (yes, he has a truck now) and he planned it so he got the concrete while he was at Home Depot getting other material. He also did the heavy lifting but I helped mix it once it was in the wheel barrow. This was a VERY easy job.

I think the guy that quoted $2500 didn’t want to do this small job so he quoted it high but if he got a sucker it would be worth it to him.

FWIW, I asked my son how much he would have paid to have it done and he said probably as much as $600.

$600 seems about right to me. $50 for the concrete, 4 to 6 hours of your time, using your truck, your wheel barrow, your tools. Yes, I can see $5 or $6 hundred.

But I still disagree with the "VERY easy". Which is okay, we are allowed to disagree.

Canada is about as free as it gets, so I think they think freedom is being able to do whatever you want, and if you don't like things the way they are you go out and make life difficult for everyone else. Bah, humbug!

I even did a ceiling fan install once, so I can't be too hard! I did have a friend that knew "stuff" helping (ok, I was helping). IIRC there was an existing overhead light in the bedroom. we took that out, put in a fan box, and fished an extra wire down the wall and pulled it into the existing switch box. then put in a 2nd switch to the fan. Then wired the fan so the original switch controlled the light, and the other one (a 3 position knob) ran the fan. Not all that hard, but made much easier already having a hole in the ceiling and power to it!

concrete, at this point, I will do a bag of quickcrete in a hole for something like a mailbox pole. but anything big like a patio is getting farmed out. I am not brave enough though to troll through the HD parking lot looking for workers.

Hyundai did about the same thing with the Veloster N, heated seats and wheel are MIA in US spec cars.

I have been reading where a lot of 2022 models are not coming with all the accessories that they have advertised. Instead they are supposedly giving credits on the price. The only car specifically mentioned in detail was various Audi's. Chip supply issue.

I have been reading where a lot of 2022 models are not coming with all the accessories that they have advertised. Instead they are supposedly giving credits on the price. The only car specifically mentioned in detail was various Audi's. Chip supply issue.

Had a member post in the A4 thread recently about having to travel 150 miles to find a car that had the safety equipment (adaptive cruise, rear cross traffic alert, etc) on the car he wanted, due to this specific issue.

I was talking to some friends about this - in 3 years, wouldn't the cars without those features be worth less on the open market?

I had 5 sheets of beadboard plywood sitting in my garage I wanted put up on my porch ceiling. One guy quoted $500 to do it. I decided to inconvenience one friend and we did it in 2 hours.

The Veloster N never offered those options on US cars. I do know BMW and Mini have been giving credit for some unavailable items- SXM and H-K are just two examples.

Motorcycle clubs (gangs) do that all the time so they don’t get separated.

As an example, let’s assume in 2024, a 2021 Audi A6 comes in as a trade loaded with all the nanny gizmos and a 2022 A6 comes in at the same time that does not have surround cameras, adaptive cruise, upgraded audio system, etc., due to the chip shortage, and both cars have low mileage. The 2021 might well bring more money than the 2022 - several thousand more.

When I appraised cars coming in as trades, the very first concern was (and continues to be) condition of the interior and exterior. The second is accessories (adaptive cruise, surround view cameras, upgraded audio system, leather vs. vinyl, heated and ventilated seats, etc.).

The chip shortage has created a mess for new car dealerships and, due to pricing above MSRP, has contributed to higher inflation. Just look at the empty lots at most dealerships and it hits home what lack of inventory causes.

My friends who are still in the car business have told me they are making more money now with fewer sales than they did 2-3 years ago when they were selling 3 times as many cars. Just finding a dealer who would sell you a new car at MSRP or a few hundred below MSRP is rare,

I was at the Subaru dealer this morning - mostly used cars, and this was an AutoNation branded dealer.

I mentioned this before - there are thousands of cars sitting in Brunswick and many east coast ports awaiting microprocessors to be inserted in the headers to enable many safety features on these cars. Once these microprocessors are inserted and the vehicles are road tested to ensure proper operation, they are released to the dealerships.

Mercedes and BMW dealerships are taking deposits on these vehicles so they become pre-sold and assigned a priority status for incoming parts.

More adventures in home repair today.
Bathroom exhaust fan in the basement bathroom hasn't been working, so I ordered a new one, exact same model, a Broan circular 1000 cu/ft per minute fan and light. I think they a re pretty common.
Spent about half an hour or more trying to remove the old unit which was installed before the drywall was put up. After struggling for a while to remove the old housing, I realized the blower motor was held in by 1 screw and 2 tabs. Removed the screw and slid it right out.
Screw the new one in, plug it into the housing, all done except reinstalling the light bulb and vent/light diffuser cover.
Turned a 5 minute job into an hour.

I run into that a lot when I have to do something more than once (like assembling furniture if you say bought 2 of the same item). takes a long time to figure out all the tricks on the first one, and after that you can do the rest in 1/4 the time.

also why the pros can rip through a job so quickly (like when I had my disposal replaced). They never have to read the instructions, and show up with every tool required already in the bucket. And what fun is a project if you don't have to make ten trips downstairs to the workbench, and at least 1 trip out to Lowes?

That makes no sense to me. If you get separated, the lead pulls to the side of the road waiting for stragglers. You don’t become narcissists and block others who are in the right of way. Never seen or heard of that before. I think I’d be just a bit peeved…..don’t care who they are…and go around their “block”!

Was never in a “gang”. And, I haven’t owned a motorcycle in quite some time. But, when I used to ride with my friends, we wouldn’t ever think about doing something like that.

Now you’re sorts kinda stuck with a housing with no place for it to go. Then again maybe not.

If you like the style you have buy a replacement fan for it. The place where you bought the replacement unit might have one in stock. If not, you’ll definitely be able to find one online. Buy it and install it. Now you have a working unit that your new house builder might be willing to install for you. If not you could always sell it if you want to go through that.

For the right price I know a home flipping guy that would be willing to take it off your hands.

The blower motor and bracket cost almost as much as the whole unit from H-D.

Well, if you were jmonroe1, you would buy another new whole unit from HD, take the dud fan unit, remove the one from the new second unit and install the dud, then return it for a full refund complaining that it was a dud.

Another interesting result of the supply chain fiasco can be quite eye-opening which I experienced over the last couple of days.

I went into 4 different jewelry stores to look at the latest models of the Date-Just Rolesor Rolex watch. “Sir, these are store samples and not for sale. If you would like to be placed on a reservation list for the model you are interested in, we will contact you when one is available.” I asked how long I would have to wait, and the response was, “…6-8 months and it could be longer.”

That floored me! Imagine having to wait that long to buy a Rolex costing $13,500+, depending on model, style, etc.? I’ve purchased several in my lifetime and never had to wait - there was a large inventory wherever I shopped and I was always able to get 20% off list price. Not any more.

At this point in my life, I’m not going to spend that kind of money on a piece of expensive jewelry like a Rolex, but if I really wanted one, I would not be able to buy one at this point in time!🤪😜

Buying a new car right now can be just as startling if you are interested in lots of technology. Shortages of certain foods and other products are being experienced right now. Add close to double digit inflation and we’re entering a phase of our lives that can be frustrating.

I don’t know how taxes are viewed in Canada but down here it’s unAmerican if you don’t cheat on your taxes. Cheating Home Depot is just downright immoral.

I mentioned that I bought some mulch at H D the other day. You paid inside then could load your purchase from the outside stock on the honor system(no loaders or checkers).
When I was on my way inside, some guy had a big trolley of mulch he was bringing out from the garden center area. When I came back out he had a trolley full and was headed back from the load it yourself outside section. Maybe they ran out in the garden center or maybe not.

Spent about half an hour or more trying to remove the old unit which was installed before the drywall was put up. After struggling for a while to remove the old housing, I realized the blower motor was held in by 1 screw and 2 tabs. Removed the screw and slid it right out.
Screw the new one in, plug it into the housing, all done except reinstalling the light bulb and vent/light diffuser cover.
Turned a 5 minute job into an hour.

I experienced the same thing at the baseball field. Those fans don't last very long. I don't know if it's because they leave them on all night a lot or if it's all the dust - maybe both.

Regardless, I just buy the unit and do what you did. Only takes a few minutes to get the desired result.

Have always used a service to start up and shut down my sprinklers each year. This year, I had an appointment with the company we've been using for a while set up for yesterday.

They were a no show. Called another company today - was told they were booking for July. Ugh.

Found a YouTube video and got my sprinklers up and running in about 15 minutes, only needing a flat head screwdriver.

Now, to shut down, I'll probably need an air compressor to blow out all the water in the fall.

We have three of those same exhaust fans. The one that failed was the newest, a couple of years newer than the others. Go figure.

You make a good point, it’s not just parts in short supply it’s tradespeople too. I had a leak in our toilet and I suspected the 40 year old wax ring was failing. I didn’t feel like doing the replacement not knowing what else I might find so I called the guy.

8 day wait.

It cost over $400 but sawing and drilling out rusted and stripped bolts took time and equipment. Glad I called the guy but the wait and the cost were a surprise.

Yes, that's the real KBB. I don't know how the scam lot could use their name, unless the owner's name is Kevin Kelly Bernard.

Unless KBB can prove that the dealership picked that name for fraudulent purposes then there really isn't much they can do. Many companies do have the same name and as long as they are not in the same business there is no real issue.

Every stinkin year, something is broken that needs fixing on mine. The company I use only charges like $90 per head to change them when busted. I gladly pay that to avoid the searching and digging they do.

BUT, they came out yesterday to start her up and told me our water pressure isn’t nearly what it should be. Today I emailed a well company who responded they are in the area. That was convenient. After playing around a little, he declared the pump is going. Says they last about 10 yrs, and ours is 18, soooo…. Awaiting an estimate. Sigh.
