You'd save enough on electric to buy the cheapest fridge at Lowe's, than running two little dorm fridges
To quote The Talking Heads, "stop making sense." (Also, I don't think there's enough width for two dorm room fridges, but I can't let small details like that get in the way of my plans...)

Wait, an old hand like you is willing to trust a dealer’s inspection? If the inspection discovers that the engine burns the oil or that the transmission skips like a kid on the way to school, will the price be the same? Will they even tell you?
I thought about that. lol. I checked it out as best I could. Oil good. No leaks. Climbed under the undercarriage. Clean. No rust. No damage. Took it for a long test drive on side streets and expressway. Strong acceleration. Smooth shifts.
But, I'm expecting they may try to raise the price for any maintenance performed. If anything semi-serious is wrong we'll pass.
I've had my Accord serviced at this dealership (Honda World) for 5 years. Don't seem as sleasy as some others.
The financing guy did come over. Thought we were buying today. Said he could get us a 5 year/50k mile extended warranty. Said he'd work with us on price. Mrs. Jip asked how much. Guy said he could get it down from $4k to $3k...maybe $2.8k.
5 year warranty for $2800 sounds great - but is it a HONDA extended warranty or a third party warranty? What’s covered and what’s not covered? Any deductibles and if so what are the deductibles? Is a car rental included if the vehicle is going to be in service for more than a day or two?
Remember, I was in the car business and am always a kind of “detail” person when it comes to extended warranties.
Third party warranty. $100 deductible. Said it covers everything. I don't recall the name of the company, but the finance guy said it was the 3rd highest rated company with so much money set aside in reserves. Didn't mention if rental was included, I'll ask. Thx.
I really hadn't planned on any warranty, but Mrs. Jip asked about it.

when I do have my wife involved (meaning it is for her car) she will go to look and test drive to decide if she wants it. But once that decision is made, and a color picked out, she wants nothing to do the sausage making process. Just tell her when we have to go sign papers and pick it up.
At this point, she would never agree to a used car though, so it makes the process a lot easier not having to deal with all the used car drama. Just costs more! Though quite likely whenever she does get a new car, it will be the last one since by the time it would need replacement many years down the road we would not still be having 2.
Would have preferred to buy new, and even encouaged it. But sometimes Mrs. Jip is more of a jip than I.

Speaking of the Sahara, I don't know what it is about Wranglers, but I can't resist modding them. My 1999 had Hella E-Code headlamps, a Banks Torque Tube header, Bilstein shocks, and MB Quart speakers. So, while I'm still waiting on the availability of the Pirelli Scorpion XTMs I decided to upgrade the steering stabilizer- I ordered an AEV/Bilstein stabilizer. I was getting a bit of wheel shimmy on bumps at highway speeds. The OEM stabilizer failed at 20k miles and was replaced under warranty, so I'm looking forward to installing it.

I will decide this time next year if I am going to commit to keeping the current Maverick forever (or at least a long time). If so, will look into a Ford ESP from Granger (or one of the online dealers that sell them cheap). The good thing for me is that I put on low miles, so can get a cheaper policy with low miles for the years. Something like 10 years, 75K miles if they offer it.

I'll have to call and ask the dealership. In looking further some estimates were much higher.
I saw a new Maverick on the road this week in their new green paint color. It's a nice shade of green. I somehow doubt it will have a very high take rate though in a world of gray vehicles.
I'm a Honda/Acura fan boy. So, take that into consideration. I REALLY love that 3.5L V6. Had it in two TLs. Just smooth, torquey, quiet.
Not sure about extended warranty. I've never bought one. But, whenever I had major service done (which wasn't often recently given my propensity to trade out before it's due), I always seemed to get a coupon from the dealer that gave me a pretty fair discount on things like AWD service and timing chain replacements. An extended warranty won't cover required service, though.
As such, given the general nature of Hondas, not sure I'd write a check for an extended warranty if see vice records are good.
@stickguy - I'm leaning in the same direction on my Maverick (10 year OE extended warranty through Granger). Picking the number of miles will be tough depending on whether I plan to keep an EV that I daily drive in the fleet some or all of the time.
I am a month short of 2 years on it at about 8600 miles. Maybe when I retire they start racking up faster but I doubt I will need more than the minimum
My bigger concern is committing to something that long but I could always demote it to beater truck status and park it outside and get a sports car for the garage!

It’s been a decade since I had a Honda V6 and pretty sure even then it was in the $1,200 range for a belt and water pump (basic package) at the dealer.
The E400 is 8 years old and I was considering taking it to an indie shop for an A Service visit, basically an oil change. Then I thought, what if there was a recall, and it is probably a good idea to keep the records up at the dealer, and to be a good customer as I think I get priority service. They only did the A service, but they also did a major software enhancement from a silent recall....glad I went in. They gave me a report on how much tire tread and brake pads I had left. And I have the peace of mind that it was all done right and was thoroughly checked out. And, I even got a real brewed coffee with a little cookie and a nice wash job for my $700.

So went back to the eye doctor today and they went over everything again. Apparently my corneas (especially the left eye) are in rough shape.
She prescribed some special eye drops to repair the damage/dryness.
We narrowed it down to overuse of contacts and my CPAP machine. Never realized one has anything to do with the other but apparently it’s pretty common. I also stopped using water in mine awhile ago and I read it’s good to do that so the air around your face is more moist. I never noticed a difference with the water and the doc said if you don’t notice a difference without it’s fine so that was the direction I headed.

When we bought the 2009 Honda Oddy van we got real Honda Care warranty in the longest version offered. I believe it was 8 years and 120k miles for about $1,200. and used it a lot saving thousands of $. Had an engine rebuild at 81k, we paid for new timing belt and water pump parts only since they were in there anyway. AC, alternator, power steering hose and pump and several more. Back then there were a few dealers in the Northeast that sold them for cost, I asked how they did that and the sales guy said that they sold so many that Honda sent them a bonus check each quarter for $250,000 to $300,000. It appeared to be legit as when I turned down the finance guys offer of $2800 and said I could get one for $1200 he said that was impossible as that was his cost.

Reminds me that I was talking with my BIL last weekend. He has a Jag (F type? The mid sized 4 door). Supercharged. About a 2016. Anyway, the dealer charges some silly price for an oil change so he decided to do it himself. He said it is 15 minutes tops. And all from the top. No drain plug so you stick a suction tube down the dipstick tube to suck the oil out. Filter is a top mount cartridge so unscrew the cap and swap in a new element (which are pretty cheap). Then put new oil in it.

the only engine issue with the V6 Hondas that I know of is the VCM problem that led to ring issues. Not sure when or if that got resolved. Or how to tell that there is an issue without seeing how fast it runs through oil. Pretty sure there was an extended warranty program on that.

It is an A-Service so they check a lot of items, and the oil alone is worth about $140. The car has had no mechanical problems and it drives like a new one, 8 years old, 50000 miles on it.....if it only costs $700 a year ($450 USD) plus normal wear and tear like tires and batteries etc I can live with that. They also did a major software update that took about 2 hours........no charge....how would your friend do that?
I made an appointment for a 6-month service on the Caddy the other day. Business must be good as the dealer is booking about a month out. Oil/filter change is $109 in worthless Canadian dollars which seems fair. I wanted them to do the annual once-over of a bunch of things which is another $100. The lady booking me in tried upselling me on lots of other things like sludge removal treatment, decarbonizing the valves, and brake caliper lube which I declined. I did go for a brake fluid change which had never been done.

Any time i was offered an extended warranty i wanted to see the exclusions page first. I was always amazed what they DIDN’T cover.

Didn't know that. Assumed it had a timing chain. Alexa says that will cost around $650.
I haven’t heard of getting a timing belt replaced for under $1000 in a long time but maybe Hondas have a simpler system so what do I know.

I'll have to call and ask the dealership. In looking further some estimates were much higher.

For 700 bucks they should have sent you home with a dozen cookies and a quart of coffee.

Engine may have been good, but they had a block of years there with questionable transmissions paired with that engine.

I think my contact wearing days may be over … and I’m not happy about it

Back then there were a few dealers in the Northeast that sold them for cost, I asked how they did that and the sales guy said that they sold so many that Honda sent them a bonus check each quarter for $250,000 to $300,000. It appeared to be legit as when I turned down the finance guys offer of $2800 and said I could get one for $1200 he said that was impossible as that was his cost.
Yeah, @imidazol97 never could remember how to do the Canadian to US conversion.

Ok, but $450 for an oil change is still crazy.

That sounds good and good to hear that you got to cause of your discomfort. Just curious but was this an ophthalmologist you went to? So, I take it that you don’t have to scrap your new glasses.

Damn. Sounds like the birth of another shade tree mechanic. Or at least an oil changer. Rip off prices will do that to a guy.
I seem to remember that’s what got me started. That and the convenience of not having to run back and forth to shops and then having to fix their screw-ups.

A lot of Honda guys say there’s no need to change the water pump or tensioner when doing the belt on the V6 (whereas they would on other brands).
@stickguy - I think Ford will give a prorated refund of the extended warranty if you sell or trade the Mav before the ten years are up.

That’s where I got mine too but the dealership changed hands so no bueno now
You want timing belt and water pump replaced when you do it.
Hondacare warranties are really inexpensive if in warranty. I recall less than $1300 for $0 deductible 8 yr / 120k miles

Yes it’s a dedicated eye care office that does surgery, cataracts, etc.
It’s a bit of a relief that essentially it’s just dry eye, but also a bit of a let down that I will most likely have to discontinue wearing contacts. I guess the silver lining is I’ll save that money lol
