Oops, missing lot of important details. In VA, silver exterior, grey interior, tires with 10k, new break pads, no stains, front passenger side dent, severalsmall scratches on the exterior all over, no accidents, one owner. Thanks.
dealer will give you little, but that car will still sell like hotcakes private sale (put a sign on it, or use craig's). even with the miles, people love old Toyotas.
If a V6, you might get $1k-$1500 for it. Maybe a couple hundred more if a 4-cyl. As others said, this is not a trade-in vehicle. List it for $2995 and watch it go in a couple of days. Try $3495 and maybe wait a little longer if you want.

2009 Lancer GTS. It's the rally car blue you see everywhere, black interior. Hail damage on the hood, a few door dings and scratches on the side, and a few larger dents on the roof from my dumb [non-permissible content removed] friends crawling on it. I could probably get them out pretty easily though. 115K miles and it drives great. 5k miles on the tires.
So what do you all think about the $8,000 deal on the '07 Civic with 71K miles in good/clean condition we got for trade-in to Carmax? Not trying to advertise for them, but it seems either they are "wrong" in the real world of offering real money, or Edmund's is way off in the "virtual" world of online price guides.

its not terribly surprising. Carmax is a very different beast than real trade-in. They should typically be about $1k better than the numbers I give on most popular cars less than 10 years old. Reason being they are buying them to sell themselves. Some dealers will step up to their number for the same reason.

They are good for very clean units. They also wildly overprice when selling, so have room to pay top dollar for easy to flip units.
Yes, I know they like to make about $4K on the cars they sell for about $10K-25K (less marketing and overhead expenses). However, they don't like non run of the mill cars, such as Audi's. They most definitely prefer high volume models like Civics and Corollas to A3's or S4's. While they might offer $1K more than typical on extremely popular high selling models, they might offer $2-3K less on an Audi. They also hate modifications.
My real world example: Day 1 Carmax offers me $4K for my slightly to moderately modded A3 (I did some work to bring it back "closer" to normal before appraising it). It had 106,000 miles and was under 8 years old, and was in pretty good clean condition (though the front had been resprayed to make it look that way; no accidents though other than rear bumper being hit by a motorcycle at low speeds; so the back bumper was repainted at one point too). Day 2 I post to Craigslist asking for $7,500. Day 3 I sell for $8,000 cash with another 2nd buyer itching to look at it and pay for it at my asking price (first guy offering above asking value sight unseen from 2 hours away to buy him a half day of "holding it" since the 2nd guy was local.
So I got double Car-max's offer in 1 day of effort, makes me think they misread the market on that one! Either that, or they just really hate Audi's and really hate any mods whatsoever.

Charger - OK, this is going to be a total guess because there are NO recent comparables to go on. Looking at RWD V6 vs AWD V6, it is about a $2500 add. So looking at RWD V8s like yours, you'd get about $19k-$19.5k. Add the AWD and you are right around $22k.

I'm not the expert @qbrozen is but I had a $54,000 MSRP S4 with 4,150 miles involved in a $22K collision recently.
The miles and age will probably reduce the diminished value difference, being 2 years old and I'm assuming 25K miles sense you didn't provide that information? Lower mileage would increase the loss in value due to the accident.
My real world case my vehicle had an actual depreciated cash value of around $50K and I wasn't going to get anyone to pay more than $40K for it (Carmax offered $37K). So figure 20%. On 75,000 that's 15,000 bucks in the real world. Insurance companies will probably say it's only $1,000 because that serves their interests. Judges might say $3,000 to $6,000, but that's based on my lawsuit sample size of 1 and I got a judge so old he probably drives a Buick.

It might be worth tempering that diminished value a bit to recognize that with a $54K MSRP, the 50 vs. 40 noted is assuming used retail value ($50K) vs. private party value of $40K (e.g., "I wasn't going to get anyone to pay more than $40K for it). Since the clean trade-in is in the <$45K range, DV is likely closer to 10-15% than 20%. In either case, a big hit to value for sure!
In other words, the owner is unlikely to see $50K out of the car (clean version) upon sale/trade, so the only time the retail value really matters at all is in the event of a total loss. In the total loss scenario, there is no DV (e.g., insurance would pay you the value to replace the car at retail).

Looking at possibly purchasing the following from a private seller:

Thanks for your help. I know very little about Jeeps.

Price is extremely high no matter what, though. The nicest automatic (sticks don't do nearly as well) with 89k miles only got $6300 at PA auction a couple of months ago. Very true. The seller is sill in love with his baby and thinks the mods are worth a ton.
Well, this isn't a generic used car. It does look immaculate. Hard to say if you could buy a bit worn and needy one, for say 5k or bottom market for these, and get it this nice for 8k. Maybe, if you want to put the effort in.
I wouldn't pay that much. But someone might. Never know on a specialty car.
On the Wrangler, I sold my 1997 in May. It was a 4 cylinder stripper with 130k miles and faded paint. It was mechanically sound. I got $6000 for it. This one is maybe worth 8 or 9k here in my area (central Virginia). For 13k you can get a JK, unless you really want a TJ.

I see what you mean on the actual cash value being more like replacement cost than private party. Still, Carmax made the best trade-in offer despite knowing they would auction it off. I know it was a solid offer because 3 Audi dealerships would not touch or beat the 37K offer. In fact, they said go sell it to Carmax!
As an Audi buyer, I know I'd probably fork over up to an extra $10K for one that hadn't been tarnished by a significant wreck. Who wants an S4 assembled in Escondido instead of Germany? Not me; unless I get $10K or more off. So my $40K was just a guess, I imagine it might have taken me a year of effort to sell it for that price, or maybe just a few months. Either way, $37K was the highest trade-in value anyone was going to give me.
I did have one dealer give me a letter that they'd reduce their offer by $5K knowing it was in an accident. Real world experience when you tell them to write down a number tells me the DV was higher then that. One thing that reduces DV is time. In my opinion the only date that matters is the date of the accident, and what the DV was on that date. The basis of my argument is that while you had the option to sell your car accident free on that date, after the accident that is no longer an option, and possibly can't sell it at all for 60 days until it gets fixed completely. My judge must have factored in that I had kept the car and my trial was a year after the accident. They don't write down the reasoning for their judgment amount, nor provide a breakdown though.

Yeah, that all sounds quite reasonable to me. From an actual, "I have this car with a crash history and I want to sell it," perspective, the numbers you listed seemed very realistic. I was only suggesting that, as the owner, you are not going to get replacement/retail cost for the car if you sell it regardless of history, so comparing DV as a calculation between what *you* can get and clean retail provides a greater spread than is realistic. Comparing the retail price of the same car with a crash history and one without should give an accurate DV spread (%) as well as would going the other way (i.e., private party (or trade) before/after).
However, as the owner at the time of the incident, diminished value is real no matter which way you look at it; at the end of the day, you are the one stuck holding the bag because every owner after you will not carry that sunk cost with them (caveat emptor assumed!).
In your particular case, at least you received *some* sort of compensation for it by way of the litigation.

2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
Going to be a tough one to hit with those miles. If, for example, I go with the lowest mileage XL example at $9700 for 103k miles, then, let's say, I use the lowest multiplier I remember from Galves of $75/1k, I come up to $14,200. I seriously doubt it would get that much at auction. My gut tells me something more like $12,500-$13k might be the number. So, on the best day possible, with the right buyer, I suppose $15k private party isn't crazy.
Now, there have been a couple of low mileage XLTs. One with 50k at $15k and one with 34k for $16,500. So figure maybe $17k-$17.5k private party. So, if an XLT, the asking price is not a HORRIBLE starting point.

Hey Q. need a # for my SIL (and I was up in your neighborhood Saturday. Took daughter to Jackson outlets to restock on stuff for next year of college. good time to go. place was dead).
anyway, SIL wants to get out of her MDX, so need a trade (and potential Carmax, since she is going to lease a replacement).
2008 MDX tech. Red (the dark red Basque pearl that is so common). Navi, and whatever else comes on the tech. 71,000 miles.
generally good shape. dealer maintained. Not sure about tires, but figure replaced not all that long ago. Body probably OK but not great. I think she had some parking lot stuff dealt with a few years ago, so minor paint work but never any collision work. I suspect it has a few dents/dings/scratches at this point. Interior probably OK, but could use a serious detail (I would tell her to get this done before shopping, so assume it will be presentable).
On Long Guyland. So what says the oracle? Not sure if she has a carmax to shop it at, so figure it would be traded at a Nissan or mazda dealer, as a cash back on a nothing down lease (and yes, if they inflated the trade value and offset into the lease payment, she would not mind!)
well, you don't paint a pretty picture. Probably in the $16k-$17k trade neighborhood. If it isn't as bad as it sounds, maybe carmax would go $17.5k-$18k. Never know with them.

Looks like a real private party, creeped on the phone# and found a residential address.
Asking is 19.5, which seems high.
So, if an XLT, the asking price is not a HORRIBLE starting point.

anyway, SIL wants to get out of her MDX, so need a trade (and potential Carmax, since she is going to lease a replacement).
