Using MSRP as the selling price, I get a pre-tax payment of $354.11 pre-tax.

Is any of the $3K due at signing being used as cap cost reduction?

I believe about 2,100 used as cap reduction.

That would knock off about $58/mo from the payment I calculated, or $295/mo (pre-tax).

BTW, we don't recommend making any sort of cap reduction on a lease ... if the car is stolen or totaled, you lose that money.

    Hey guys,

Great discussions here. Thanks, this is my first post.

When it comes to negotiating your lease, what is generally the best strategy? What number do you focus on first (Purchase Price, Residual, Interest Rate, etc.)? I'd most likely be working for a base model 36 month lease at 12,000 miles per year. Interest rate is currently very good at 0,9%. MRSP is $29,995 plus $1,650 PDI & Freight and $331.15 in other fees for a total sticker purchase price of $31,976.15. I've done some research and the invoice price of the car is $27,773 (does not include PDI & Freight and other fees, not sure you should add them on?).

Those are for a 2015 model, I may wait until the 2016 models are available though, I was told they would come out in October. I figure I can have a better chance negotiating a higher Residual given they would be getting a 2016 model back in the 2018 calendar year.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

There are four numbers in a lease:
    1. MSRP - bottom line number from the window sticker; not negotiable
    2. Selling price - negotiated just as if you were buying the car
    3. Residual - set by the bank, represents the expected value of the car (% of MSRP); not negotiable
    4. Money Factor - similar to interest rate; set by bank, but dealer can mark up for more profit

Focus on the selling price and ensure that the money factor isn't marked up by the dealer.

You get the base rate by asking us, then when you do your calculations with the other numbers and the dealer gets something different, you can call them out on it (politely, of course).

I wound up taking a mf of .00205 on a Limited 6sp, but they dropped the price to $30165 from the MSRP of $33650. I started to argue about the mf, since .00155 came out to about $17/mo less than at .00205, and instead of adjusting the mf they dropped the selling price further to get the payment down $17/mo. Apparently they preferred to have a selling price about $500 under invoice versus giving me the base mf. In any case, as the buyer, I got the monthly payment I wanted, just odd that they used the selling price vs. the mf to lower my payment...

Yeah, it's about where the dealer makes their money - increasing the MF from the base is money in their pocket, whereas a lower selling price doesn't matter as much, other than to count as another unit sold. Enough units sold may earn them a volume bonus from Subaru that more than makes up the loss on your individual sale.

I think it's probably to short the salesperson out of some commission on the deal.. Profit gets pushed from the new car sale to the F&I manager..

    (that's my theory, anyway..)

It varies over time.. but, yes, this month, Subaru numbers are national.

Other makes tend to have regional numbers (Mazda, Kia, Toyota, for example)

Ok. Can you please give me your opinion of this deal.
    15' base sti
msrp is 36130 but with dealer addons 37600
    selling price 35150
    residual 23484
    36 month
    10k year
    5000 down
    350/mo taxes and fees included
includes 699 dealer fee, 550 for tags, and 6xx acquisition fee. I realize that putting money down is not a great choice but I need my payment as low as possible right now and plan to purchase at end of lease also.
Thanks. I'm crossing my fingers the numbers go down in June. I'm holding out for another 500 off msrp since they are still 1k above invoice.
  • royal52royal52 Member Posts: 8
What do you think is a fair profit to them on a car like that? Do you feel the will come down from the $1K profit?
  • zzbellzzbell Member Posts: 34
    edited June 2015
Dealer would still make close to 2 grand even selling to me at invoice. There are are dealer fees, holdbacks, bank kickbacks, market adjustments, bonuses, showroom payments, etc etc.....
They would make almost 3 grand at the current offering on this deal. An acceptable profit, at least when I sold cars, was 3%. However I understand that he can probably get a lot more from someone else buying it.
And I'm not sure if they will come down any more or not. They sure don't seem to want to budge, but I'm in no hurry and it's still sitting on their lot as far as I know.

  • royal52royal52 Member Posts: 8
I'm in the same situation here in Canada.

I'm thinking of doing a 2015 WRX base model 3 year lease 20,000km/year. Interest rate is 0.9% with residual of 59% - $18,201.50. Sticker price of the car is $29,995.00, with fees in that increases to $31,972.15.

I have them down to $30,442.48 with fees in which works out to $404 all in per month on the lease.

    According to unhaggle.com their invoice price is $27,145 + mandatory fees of $1,987 - a $1,000 manufacturer incentive = $28,132.00.

So they currently have a profit of $2,310.48.

I'm also in no hurry and its still sitting on their lot, as well as a number of 2016 WRX's that arrived yesterday. I'm hoping to get them down some more as I've been keeping my dealer invoice cost numbers in my back pocket for a final haggle.

What do you think of my situation?

    Thanks,
  • zzbellzzbell Member Posts: 34
I would think you could get them down more but Canadian dealers may be completely different from the USA. I was also working on a 15 WRX base model that was at 27,732. They brought it down to invoice - 500 so the final numbers would have been.
    $3500 down
255/ month plus taxes. And that is at our 4.32% here. Each 1 grand down lowers the payment on my deal about 20-25 bucks so I would THINK that you could get a better deal.
The reason I didn't end up choosing the WRX is because I researched them and found that people are having ECU problems where the car looses all power. There are threads on this problem that start more than a year ago and still people are having this happen in May this year. And though there are thousands of them out there with zero problems I could not take that risk. I have 2 children so my wife put an immediate stop to the wrx. You may want to research that a bit more on the Subaru forums. Just google 2015 WRX ecu problems. Best of luck to you with your decision and deal.

    short throw shifter

$1500 down and 350 a month after all fees. After reading this thread, i think its a great deal. I forgot the selling cost was, but assume 31,000 pre taxes/fees.
