(the cap cost does not include lease cash or trade-in value)
-if you incorporate trade-in value and lease cash the adjusted cap is: 46,458
What is the monthly number for these figures? We will be doing a sign and drive without paying the first month.
We are trading in a vehicle. I know that using the money towards cap cost reduction is a bad idea. How do you avoid this on a trade-in (the trade is mitigating our tax burden-which in MD is on the price of the vehicle and not usage)?
Thank you for all your help!
There is a difference between using trade equity as capitalized cost reduction (down payment) versus using it to cover up front fees and taxes.
In your case, using it to address the tax on the full vehicle price makes sense; alternatively, you could add that tax amount to the cap cost and spread it out over the lease term.
If you choose the latter, simply have the dealer cut you a check for the equity.
Thanks Michael: what monthly payment do you get for the referenced vehicle for the two cap cost: 48,679 or 46,458 if we use the trade to pay for taxes and fees?
What lease term and how many miles per year is this for?
Hi Michael, Thank you for your helpful posts. I have received this offer in Cincinnati, OH and it seems substantially higher.
Acura SH-AWD MD Tech + Entertainment A.Honda Preferred Tier 36/10 MSRP - $52,380 [The website says $51,440, both acura dealers have this as their MSRP] 6.75% Upfront Sales Tax - $1348.75 [ I don't know why this is not included in the monthly payment. Could be an OH thing ?] Acquisition Fee - $595 Cap, Lic, Title - $250 Down Payment - $750
Cap. Cost - $50,027.75
Residual Value - 57% - $29856.60 [57% at 10KMI for Tech+Ent, what is it for 12KMI]
Monthly Payment - $593.06
Even if I use edmunds calculators, it comes down to around $600. Is this correct ?
Lastly he calculates $32.75 + $560.31 (Monthly Depreciation). Does anyone know what this $32.75 is?
One quick addition 32.75 = 79884*0.000410 - I am not sure what this is.
In OH, sales tax is computed against the sum of the lease payments and is collected up front. You can either pay that amount at lease signing or add it into the cap cost, which seems to be the case here.
The $32.75 is the interest ('rent charge' in lease speak). It is calculated as the sum of the cap cost and residual amount (the $79,884), multiplied by the money factor (.00041). However, that MF is marked up - the base MF for the MDX this month is .00020.
If I use the base MF with your prices, I get $576.29/mo; I am within .01 of the dealer quote if I use the marked up MF, so that is adding about $16/mo to your payment.
Politely but firmly tell the dealer you won't sign a deal with a marked up MF; they know what the base rate is.
What are the details of the "sign and drive" lease option? I'm looking at 40991 price on 45955 msrp for awd base. This has the .00010 MF and no-rebate.
I'm told the regular program has the .00020 MF and a $750 rebate (also available if finance).
What's the delta on these program? For sin and drive, is a payment rolled into cap cost or waived or payments calculated based on 35?
thanks
First payment is waived (actually, paid for by the dealer) in a 'sign and drive' deal.

What lease term and how many miles per year?
36/12 Also, where do accessories fit into equation - eg, all weather mats, roof rack, etc from dealer? Are these added to cap cost and residualized so you only end up paying for the 42% you use over 3 years, or do you end up paying for entire cost?

$405 a month for sign and drive; $412 per month without.
Accessories are not subject to residual; you will pay for 100% of them over the lease term.

.00020 and 56%. If you are adding the fees into the lease, we would need to know the adjusted cap cost to calculate the payment.
Can someone please provide the RV and MF for a 2016 MDX AWD Tech 12/36 in NJ?
In addition:
Can someone let me know a little about the sign & drive program (I understand that the MF is lower - .0001 vs .0002), which the dealer confirmed, but they're asking me for 1st month payment up front. I seem to recall reading that the dealer pays the first payment and I would walk away with zero out of pocket and 35 payments remaining.
Is there any lease cash available now, and if so, are there specific terms needed to qualify?
Roughly, what should the cost be to have a remote started added?
I'm currently emailing with a dealer about leasing a 2016 SH-AWD Advance. I was initially quoted a purchase price of $50,950. I asked for a monthly payment on a sign and drive 36/10 lease and was quoted $647/mo (includes 9% sales tax for Los Angeles County).
I pushed for details and the residual is 57% and MF .0002, although I understand it should be .0001 - is there some magic phase to use other than "sign and drive" to get that rate? He dodged my request for a breakdown of fees, just said that there was a $595 bank fee the payment he quoted included all the fees. Even using the higher .0002 MF, I calculate that he has added $1820 to original price quoted. Does this seem excessive, since this wouldn't include sales tax?
Finally, I am currently leasing a 2013 MDX, which I won't be trading in. What kind of loyalty incentives are available?

.00020 and 56%. $1000 lease cash
1. Sign and drive requires the dealer to cover the first payment 2. $1000 - but, this is a factory to dealer incentive. Use this knowledge to negotiate your best price 3. No idea.

I confirm the 57% residual and .00020 MF (.00010 for sign and drive).
If the dealer is being evasive about the fees, it's time to start working with another dealer. Only takes one to meet your numbers.
There is a $595 bank fee, and some miscellaneous CA DMV and dealer cost (doc fee of $80, for example). But, no first payment due on sign and drive.

To elaborate a bit more, we were in the dealership over the weekend and we signed initial paperwork, one form being the sheet that shows MSRP, Cap Cost, Term, Monthly payment, etc. One signature on that. The second form was a credit check I believe. We have not yet taken delivery or signed anything with finance. The dealer charged my credit card the amount of the first month's payment.
Rough numbers, from what I recall, were as follows:
MDX AWD Tech in NJ 36mo, 12k miles MSRP $50380 Cap Cost approx $48000 Dealer paying last 2 pmts of my existing lease ($840 total) Dealer added remote start @ cost of $890 (i don't think it's reflected in the cap cost above)
I asked to do sign-and-drive as we wanted little to nothing out-of-pocket. Dealer said all we had to put down was first month's payment.
Numbers were calculated using MF of 0.0001 and RV of 56%
Monthly payment came out to $675. Does this seem good or bad? Thanks!

It is my understanding that as part of the "sign and drive" promotion from Acura the dealer "contributes" the first month's payment. That's why it's called "sign and drive" - all fees are added into the cap cost, dealer makes the first payment, and you drive off only owing 35 more. The MF is discounted as you are adding the fees to the cap cost.
Does your cap cost include the sales tax? NJ calculates the lease sales tax up front against the sum of the payments - this amount can be paid at signing (separate from sign and drive terms) or added into the cap cost and paid over the 35 remaining payments.
I get $557/mo before tax using your prices, the .00010 MF and 56% residual. Long way from $675/mo, even if I add whatever the tax amount is.

Just got revised numbers as follows:
2016 AWD Tech 36mo/12k miles 56% RV, MF 0.0001 $50,380 MSRP $48,657 Selling Price (supposedly includes taxes and all fees) $625/mo total w/ tax (I think they're using 0.0002 as the MF though -- have questioned this)
Curious though, am I paying taxes twice if they're including the taxes in the selling price of the car AND it's being added to the monthly payment? Using the Edmunds calculator I'm getting a pre-tax payment of $575.58 (56% RV, MF 0.0001), and after tax of $615.87. Thoughts?

$583 with .00020 and $576 with .00010.
Should only pay tax once. On line calculators don't always accommodate for nj taxes.

We don't track selling prices - read back through the last page or two of this discussion to see what others have been able to negotiate.
It rarely makes sense to end a lease early - did you get the payoff number from Acura directly, or are you relying on what the dealer is telling you?
Then, get an independent quote of the trade in value - if you have a CarMax handy, take it there for a quote.
That way, you'll know if you have positive or negative equity. Dealer may be low balling you on the trade value.
Michael, I got payoff directly. Dealer is paying lease off clean with no equity which seems fair based on appraisals I've gotten. So I'd start fresh with no added costs on the new lease. This will lower my payment by $150 per month with the same lease terms as I had. I have looked at other's posts and taken screenshots. I feel much better about my negotiations with the knowledg . I'll let you know what I end up doing.

Perfect ... I always say that knowledge is power.
Seems like a pretty fair deal, then, if you aren't rolling over any negative equity into the new lease.

$1000 lease cash on Tech only.
We don't track selling prices, so it's hard to say. Check out the QX60 lease discussion, and see what others are paying.
Thanks for all this great information guys, it has really helped me negotiate some great leases and now it is time for the next one. I'm curious about the differences in what Michaell and kyfdx quoted for residuals, did it change the past couple days or was it because they are in different states?
In any case, I'm looking in NC at an AWD Advanced MSRP $56,170. I have not started negotiations, I want to get all my ducks in a row first. Could you confirm the RV and also the MF (I've see some people recently talking about .0001 as well).
Is there lease cash available on the AWD Advanced? If so, that is just part of the financing package and should drop the cap cost once I've negotiated the price?

The different residuals have to do with the number of miles per year - my numbers are for 15,000 miles per year, my co-hosts are for 10,000 miles (+3%). 12,000 miles per year are 2% higher than the 15,000 mile residual.
The .00010 MF is for a true 'sign and drive' lease - all fees are added into the cap cost and the dealer makes the first payment.
The $1000 lease cash is available for the Advanced trim. Yes, it can be used to lower the cap cost.
With $0 down and only minimum driveoff $1,079.94 total out of pocket (includes 1st months payment, tax and DMV fees) 35 months at 12,000 miles per year = $460.50 + tax ($499.64 including tax) Residual Value $27,092.80 Flex Cash of $750.00 (this is applied towards your down payment) Money Factor is .0002

Those numbers give me $465/mo plus tax, so pretty close to what you're seeing.
However, I don't see the bank fee of $595 anywhere in the deal .. find out where it is?
I get $506/mo pre-tax on the 15K numbers; pretty close to your $502/mo quote.
Don't know how Acura adjusts the residual for extra miles, so can't comment on the 20K quote. That's 15,000 extra miles, and I only see a reduction in the residual of $1500, or 7.5 cents per mile. That seems incredibly cheap, given that most brands charge .15-.25 per mile for anything over 15,000.
What should I expect with a 2WD with Technology package with AcuraWatch Plus (15K)?
Residual will be 2% lower, but there is $1000 Bonus lease cash on that model that should offset the difference. The higher MSRP and selling price will increase the payment. ($12 increase per thousand MSRP).

I get roughly the same payment with those numbers. Only way to improve on it is to negotiate a better selling price.
I just leased a 2016 MDX with Tech Package and AccuraWatch:
(numbers are rounded) Original MSRP: 49.7K Selling Price/Cap: 45,500 Monthly: 518 After Tax: 567 (SF Bay Area, CA) Miles: 15k length: 36 months MF: .00020 RV: 26.7K Driveoff: first months payment (no bank fees etc, they covered that)
I just contacted the dealership (a day after) to see if I can adjust the contract to 20K miles and they said it would be 560/month (613 after taxes), but the residual would stay the same. Shouldn't the residual go lower?

The $32.75 is the interest ('rent charge' in lease speak). It is calculated as the sum of the cap cost and residual amount (the $79,884), multiplied by the money factor (.00041). However, that MF is marked up - the base MF for the MDX this month is .00020.
If I use the base MF with your prices, I get $576.29/mo; I am within .01 of the dealer quote if I use the marked up MF, so that is adding about $16/mo to your payment.
Politely but firmly tell the dealer you won't sign a deal with a marked up MF; they know what the base rate is.
36/12 residual would be 56%

Also, where do accessories fit into equation - eg, all weather mats, roof rack, etc from dealer?
Are these added to cap cost and residualized so you only end up paying for the 42% you use over 3 years, or do you end up paying for entire cost?
Thanks!!
Accessories are not subject to residual; you will pay for 100% of them over the lease term.

This are updated number 2WD with tech
MSRP $48,210.00
Lease price $42,879.00
adjusted cap cost $43,794
12K/36m
What monthly payment would that be?
In addition:
- Can someone let me know a little about the sign & drive program (I understand that the MF is lower - .0001 vs .0002), which the dealer confirmed, but they're asking me for 1st month payment up front. I seem to recall reading that the dealer pays the first payment and I would walk away with zero out of pocket and 35 payments remaining.
- Is there any lease cash available now, and if so, are there specific terms needed to qualify?
- Roughly, what should the cost be to have a remote started added?
Thanks!adjusted cap cost =2016 MDX/Advance - $53,809.77... Can you please provide the Monthly payment for 36/12K.
Thanks!
Thank you!

1. Sign and drive requires the dealer to cover the first payment
2. $1000 - but, this is a factory to dealer incentive. Use this knowledge to negotiate your best price
3. No idea.

If the dealer is being evasive about the fees, it's time to start working with another dealer. Only takes one to meet your numbers.
There is a $595 bank fee, and some miscellaneous CA DMV and dealer cost (doc fee of $80, for example). But, no first payment due on sign and drive.
No loyalty incentives on the MDX.

MDX AWD Tech in NJ
36mo, 12k miles
MSRP $50380
Cap Cost approx $48000
Dealer paying last 2 pmts of my existing lease ($840 total)
Dealer added remote start @ cost of $890 (i don't think it's reflected in the cap cost above)

2016 AWD Tech
36mo/12k miles
56% RV, MF 0.0001
$50,380 MSRP
$48,657 Selling Price (supposedly includes taxes and all fees)
$625/mo total w/ tax (I think they're using 0.0002 as the MF though -- have questioned this)
Curious though, am I paying taxes twice if they're including the taxes in the selling price of the car AND it's being added to the monthly payment? Using the Edmunds calculator I'm getting a pre-tax payment of $575.58 (56% RV, MF 0.0001), and after tax of $615.87. Thoughts?
Should only pay tax once. On line calculators don't always accommodate for nj taxes.

I got payoff directly.
Seems like a pretty fair deal, then, if you aren't rolling over any negative equity into the new lease.

Thanks again
The .00010 MF is for a true 'sign and drive' lease - all fees are added into the cap cost and the dealer makes the first payment.
The $1000 lease cash is available for the Advanced trim. Yes, it can be used to lower the cap cost.
