Explorer - I liked the picture of the 67 Mustang you linked to. Believe it or not, when I was in high school I was riding in one that looked just like it. It was one of my buddy's mother's car and my friend didn't negotiate a slight curve in our neighborhood one winter's night. He put that sucker down a slope and right into the creek. Didn't go that far in though, so the damage wasn't all that bad. He had to save his money up and buy a used 60 Falcon after that B) As you can tell, he wasn't always the best driver, so I can state that the old Falcon was a fairly sturdy car taking the beatings he gave it!

Weren't those Mustangs of that vintage the ones that had "Pinto" gas tanks?

Yep, trunk floor was the gas tank, get hit and the rubber fillers hose in the trunk lets go, spraying gas everywhere.

Caught a small break in the weather today, took the old dear out on the highway (no gratuitous pics!). Short drive, maybe 30 miles round trip. No issues at all, probably drove faster than 50% of the cars on the road, as 405 attracts the timid and scared. Sweet and smooth at 65 mph, the engine hums along and nowadays I notice there's a lot more road noise than in a modern car. Only quirk might be when off the highway, I was hot-rodding around and flew over a railroad crossing with a slight rise. Tracks are smooth, but I felt like I caught air, and I heard a clank when driving over it. I hope it was a plate on the road and not the car B)

    It felt like it B)

I don't always baby that car - it seems to like be driven kind of hard, always seems to run a little smoother after a faster run (or maybe it's just an illusion as it idles smoothly). I maybe should take it easier sometimes though.

Fair enough for the price if it's not rusty, and there's a lot of aftermarket stuff for these cars to spiff 'em up.

Don't see any AC, which is a minus, but it does have power steering so that's good. Engine bay with funky wiring and spray-can valve covers and a batter charger not too inspirational, but if you want a really really nice one, you're going to have to kick in another $10K.

I want to sell some of my cars and want to set a fair and realistic sales price on them. You guys are looking at CL ads everyday and are more in touch with the "car market" than I am. Please tell me what is a realistic price range for them:
    1984 Maserati Quattroporte III
    1986 Maserati 425 (4 door biturbo, auto)
    1983 Pininfarina (Fiat 2000) Azzura
1983 Porsche 928S (auto, messy interior)
1983 Porsche 928S (auto, good interior)
Bonus Point: 1970 Citroen DS21 Pallas parts car.
They are all "ran when parked" some years ago. They have been stored indoors all the time I have owned them. I am including a few pictures I took today. Unfortunately because my storage space is so cramped I could not get a good angle to shoot the pictures.
I am looking forward to your comments.
    Thanks in advance
    Jorge

It is amazing that the Citroen can be unbolted apart by major pieces. They were really ahead of their time. I remember riding in one when we lived in France, a DS Pallas model with leather. Nothing rode like it and the seats were super soft yet very comfortable.

Citroen parts must have value to someone.

I've always been intrigued by those old Quattroportes, but I am not that much of a self-torture enthusiast. Same for 928s - love looking at them.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Very hard to speculate on value without seeing them up close. I could throw you some ballpark numbers but I sure wouldn't use just some guesses as the basis for selling them.

What you need to do is:

    a) Clean them up
    b) Get running whatever you can get running
    c) Put them up for auction on www.bringatrailer.com

In this way, the world gets to vote on what your cars are worth. The better your photos, the more thorough your written copy in the auction, the better your result will be. A link to a video really helps as well.

My "guessimates" are based on the premise that they will be sold non-running, and therefore the seller assumes a risk and will bid cautiously. Most of these cars (except the Fiat) are extremely costly to repair or restore, and frankly, none of them are actually "worth" restoring. (By "worth", I don't mean merit, I mean "the cost of restoration exceeds the value of a currently restored example).

    1984 Maserati Quattroporte III -- $3K--$4K
1986 Maserati 425 (4 door biturbo, auto)--whatever anyone will give you (probably a parts car)
    1983 Pininfarina (Fiat 2000) Azzura -- $3K-$5K
1983 Porsche 928S (auto, messy interior) --$1500-$2500 (probably a parts car)
    1983 Porsche 928S (auto, good interior) -- $3K-$5K
Bonus Point: 1970 Citroen DS21 Pallas parts car. --whatever anyone will give you.

If anything can be made to run, you could add about $1500.

These prices are realistic ASKING prices, and the cars will most likely sell at somewhere around these numbers. It really depends on how much time and effort you want to put into marketing, and how motivated you are to move them along.

Good Luck and by all means don't take my guesses as gospel. Ask whatever you please for them and I hope you get more than I say.

Neither sellers, nor dealers, nor price guides, nor appraisers set the market for cars like this---only buyers determine the market.

Your Chevelle dollar does not go far here in the NorthEast. I see some stuff to like here:I do see:

    - missing wheel wells
    - hacked door panels
    - missing heater core
    - that battery
    - probably later model engine

    What else?

I do think it's a real SS, with that instrument panel and the "SS" small badges on the door panels inside where there would otherwise be small "Malibu" badges in the same place.

Smallish thing that makes me crazy--the "SS" front fender badges were drilled about two inches above and an inch back from where the factory did them. That's not a hard thing to figure out--measure from the old fenders--but a lot of people take the easy way out. I do know this; it's about impossible to correct, and anyone who knows those cars will see that above most everything else as soon as they walk up to the car.

I do realize, of course, that the seller is not asking big money for this car. It does have original upholstery inside.

Sagging headliner, water or sun damage right rear seat/headliner area, chipped paint, door misaligned, extra battery on front floor, missing radio..and painted over weatherstipping is never a good sign.

Dash looks right but those can be switched out.

Kinda looks like a rat from the photos but it's cheap enough, so.....

Problem is, you'd have to tear it apart to make it decent. You can buy an SS that's real nice for $25K--$30K, so can you get from HERE to THERE for $22K?

The hood has a massive goiter on it that never saw the inside of a GM assembly plant.

The dome light lens is missing.

Everything under the hood needs to be redone/replaced.

I doubt the SS badges are what came on that car.

I do believe it's a real SS. With the other shortcuts and stuff on that car, I'd be surprised if both the dash and interior door panels (or at least the door panel emblems) were (correctly) switched from an SS into a non-SS. Pretty sure that's a non-SS steering wheel, but then people do switch wheels frequently in my experience. I'd have to look at the brochure.

No way to really know if it's a real SS without a build sheet. However, if it had a "W" engine code, that would be one good identifier. Otherwise, no data plate or VIN # would tell you. Best you can do is count up all the SS options and then you'd at least have some circumstantial evidence---but it's not that solid. Everything can be added.

In '72, you could even get an SS with a 350 2-barrel--same engines as a more pedestrian Chevelle. In fact, the only engine you could get on an SS that you couldn't get on a "regular" Chevelle was the 454, in '72:

The car is also lacking rocker moldings, which regular Malibu models had but SS package cars did not.
