From everything I read, I think the People's Republic of Seattle government is going to eventually blow it and push companies away. I recently read that migration out of Silicon Valley is starting to occur. You can't just keep increasing regulations and taxes. That party eventually comes to an ugly end.

While I can't speak for every company, my employer has its HQ in Palo Alto. I got a chance to speak with our CFO today at the Denver office holiday party, and he indicated that any requisition to hire is automatically moved to Denver. Just too expensive to staff people in the Bay Area.

That's been going on for some time. Heck, the Californicators (mostly LA) started arriving here en masse about 30 years ago, and transplants from the bay area about 10 years ago. They end up bringing with them what they claimed they wished to escape.

Locally, I think Seattle has mostly pushed companies into adjacent suburbs, which are mostly still in the same crazy county, but aren't quite as insane as Seattle (more car-friendly, less hypocritical old activist mentality). Organizations need to be careful as to where they relocate, or they might have talent pool issues. Many people aren't willing to give up certain quality of life factors, nor relocate to areas where most don't share their ideals. I know one person who moved to Atlanta, and another to Austin. Atlanta guy lasted a few years and ran home. Austin guy is still there, but says it is an island in a sea of insanity, and the nice winter weather and (now marginally) cheaper housing is what keeps him going. IIRC, when Toyota moved operations to Texas, quite a few didn't come along for the ride.

They likely wanted it that way. Easy to shed excess bodies. And cheaper to hire lower paid replacements that want to be there, instead of moving more expensive ones out.

Last I heard it's about 50% moving so far for Toyota, which is higher than many of these relocations. New neighbor is one of them, loves the much shorter commute.

Who knows? A lot of people aren't meant to live where they were born and raised. I had a company that moved from NYC to Charlotte. I have a number of friends that are down there for 15 years now. I see the allure. Some people went and returned within 3 years. For all we put up with in NY (Long Island), it would be weird to live anywhere else.

I'd be open to most anywhere with enough pay B)

But I don't know if I would jump at the chance of going to a cheaper cost of living area if it meant a pay cut, as there are usually sacrifices to compensate for the lower cost.

I would like to retire in my sleepy hometown. I still bump into more people I know there than where I've lived for 25 years here.

My wife will have no part of that, though! (She's not from there.)

I think I'd prefer to euthanize myself than be forced to move to some parts of the country.

I've oft-surmised that for everyone who feels that way (and most do), the people at the receiving end most likely feel identically about moving where the first person lives, LOL.

I was on a conference call with a person from the Bay Area this morning - the temp there and the temp here in Colorado were virtually identical (mid to upper 30's).

His comment was that they paid too much in property taxes to have such poor weather.

I have family who lives in an economically depressed town in western WA. People there, young ones especially, complain about the place, as they can visit the bustling relatively prosperous Puget Sound rat race and be back home in an easy day trip. I've told them once that it isn't all bad - that large parts of the country have it much worse than their town, and that much of many states are just like their town. If I could keep my current income, I would consider living in such a place, as even with the drawbacks, it is still close to civilization, and I know the area. The grass is always greener I guess, and it is all relative. Those small towns are better for finding project cars anyway.

I've always since college worked at large corp HQ settings. The money is good, but expenses are high. If I could keep my money and work in a lower cost of living place, it would be tempting. To go someplace else and make the going rate.... I don't know. My wife loves upstate NY, and things can be much cheaper, but it might be too quiet. Either way, I wouldn't ever want to be too far from my kids, as they grow up. My folks are still in the house I grew up in and I appreciate that they never took off for Fla or anything like that

I work at home. I could buy a lot more house in my old hometown than where I live now, and I think the geography is prettier (greener; in a valley, etc.). Oh well. Wife says if I go it'll be by myself, LOL.

At some point, I'd like to move somewhere a little warmer, but my wife has a big family, a lot of them are needy, and she feels like she needs to look out for them.
One good thing about the winter is it gives you a good excuse to put off repairs on your old car.
My Mustang sprung a radiator leak. I put some sealer in it and it worked as long as I drove it regularly.
Cold weather? Wash it, change the oil, fill it with gas, put the cover on it and don't worry about it until next spring. :)

Please pretty please stay in Cali! Don't move we don't need a bunch of Californians with lots of cash, from the sale of their homes, driving up the price of local real estate. We also have more than enough people here clogging up the freeways.

With the cost of housing so high in the NE, folks from there can buy a very nice home in the Charlotte area and still not spend as much as they did in the NE. We have 4 moderate seasons. What's not to like? Good bagels are still hard to come by.

Like that area. Good pro sports and like lake Norman.
We stayed at the Ritz using the BMW corporate rate. I just felt awkward having 4 people opening 2 sets of doors every time we went in or out.
Found another way in/out and felt more comfortable after that.

1978 Trans Am---might be an ok parts car. These come in many different flavors--W72, Special Edition, SE W72, and hence values vary widely.
