$10/hr is sometimes high. Last night's Jensen Healey sold for just a little more than the cash they had in it. Now that they're saying how many hours Ant has in each car, I multiply that by $100 and add it to the cash expense to see if they break even in real terms.

Wow, you guys have really lived sheltered lives. ;)

There has been a "Buskers Festival" in our city for over 20 years. In the early days it was more fun because they were pretty basic street performers and nothing too slick. But now they are all touring acts and the hard sell for money donations starts from the minute they walk out. I avoid it all now because how many jugglers and fire-eaters can a person stand? I keep hoping it will get cancelled but the draw for waterfront businsses near where it gets held keeps it going. Little kids and adults who like juvenile humor seem to like it.

That’s right. Last year I went to Toronto, and there was a busker festival I wanted to go to but never made it.

Yeah. The RX7 last night, he had 36 hours and they made about $1200. Add to that, the prices they pay for some services and parts is pretty dubious.

Terrible made-up word for street performers. I would have thought a Buskers Festival involved hay and corn eating.

the 911 is pretty. I am not that brave. Odds are it will cost a fortune, and I assume that is not a particularly valuable model. I guess if you are mechanically inclined and can confirm there is no rust, and the interior is OK, might get something nice. Sounds like a Wheeler Dealers car!

the hearse? Interesting. But how can you list one of those, and not have interior pics?

Well, 'made up' many years ago:

"The term busking was first noted in the English language around the middle 1860s in Great Britain. The verb to busk, from the word busker, comes from the Spanish root word buscar, with the meaning "to seek".[1] The Spanish word buscar in turn evolved from the Indo-European word *bhudh-skō ("to win, conquer").[2] It was used for many street acts, and title of a famous Spanish book about one of them, El Buscón."

Not the best choice for a 911, no. The 1978 on up "SC" is a much better car and for less or equal money.

    Hi Guys,
I've been away for quite a while and happy to be back. Do any of you know what the sales rate is on Craig's List. I have 38 saved searches on CL that I check almost daily. My searches cover all the lower 48 states. When I see something interesting I bookmark them. When I go back and check my bookmarked ads at least 90% have been deleted because they ran out of time. Have asking prices on CL gone crazy?
I search for cars from 1949 to 1978. I search for Sedans, Coupes, and Station Wagons.
Last year I had a 1986 Jaguar XJ-S V12 coupe for sale. The asking price was $650. This car has been sitting for a while and its no pretty but it has a documented 36k original miles, no accidents, and one previous owner. I received a few crazy questions and that was all. I got fed up took down the ad after I figured that it was going to cost me more to get it out of it's storage space (indoors) than what I would net from the sale. Just not worth the effort. I see several Jaguars like mine on CL with much higher prices. I am confused as to what is going on with CL sellers and buyers. If I could I wish I could download the results from my searches into a Microsoft database that would enable me to run some stats. Unfortunately I haven't figure out how to do it.
Looking forward to reading your comments.

I look at CL as more entertainment than serious business. Many prices are crazy, many cars are dodgy. I think luck is the key to buying or selling there - a few gems seem to creep in now and then, but they might just look good, and you have to be quick. I've sold misc household items on CL, and even that can be a challenge, with ghosters and game players being common. I think many have migrated to venues like FB marketplace and OfferUp.

Speaking of FB marketplace, I am not an avid facebooker, but I took a 5 minute peek tonight, and found two cars that caught my eye. First, a 1987 Topaz, 90K miles, same owner since 1987, $1600. Not the greatest car, but these are quite rare today, and a cheap way to have something obscure at Radwood or a Ford meet. Maybe the Tempo that was in my family for years has given me rose tinted glasses. I wouldn't buy it, but I don't hate it, and hope someone enjoys it:

    image

And then this thing. Asking 10K, which isn't cheap, but it looks great in the few pics provided. Seller claims it is automatic, could be a Hydrak? Interesting! These are immensely expensive to restore, if it is as good as it looks, this is a deal for the MB enthusiast. I have no place to keep it, and shouldn't spend that kind of money right now anyway, but if I had space and money, I might take a peek:

    Hi fintail,
Thank you for your comments. I've been doing the CL thing for years but at the moment it s more entertainment than anything else, Like you I don't have the space or the funds for a new acquisition.
    That MB looks very nice.

There are a number of questions raised in your posts.

First up, you are already looking at a small slice of the market. It may not seem like it to some of us, but 1978 was a looong time ago. Especially in dog years, which is how cars age.

Secondly, the cost of puting a car on craigs is negligible, and until recently, it was even less. That tends to bring out the flakes. I watch craigslist as part of my daily routine; I have two or three searches that I check, so it is unlikely that something interesting will pop up and I won't see it.

Even so, the 'reasonably' priced cars are few and far between. The typical craigslist seller, much like the newspaper ads of years gone by, has no clue about buying or selling car. They know how to 'read' but they don't know how to 'read blue book' or black book or whatever. They see the numbers, but they don't understand the context. However, internet! so they are instant experts. Most ads are just ridiculously overpriced but sellers don't understand that

There are occasional gems but they go fast. Lots of people watch craigs. Keep in mind that the limit of my exotic desires is a manual transmission, so there's a new one five or ten times a week in my market.

For those looking for 1949 unicorns, it's going to be a serious exercise in frustration. My idea is that by watching CL regularly, I keep myself informed of the state of the used-car market, so when another post-doc gets sent to me for help with getting wheels, I'll have something useful to say. It's all part of the service ;) It's cheap entertainment, and a study course by osmosis.

    cheers -mathias

    Hi Mathias,
Thank you for your reply. You have confirmed my suspicion that the majority of the cars on CL are way over priced and yes I am looking at a sliver of the market.
Here is an example of crazy pricing:

That was my reaction too since the ones I have seen listed range from the mid $60s to mid $70s. And it is not a joke this outfit specializes in rare and exotic cars in similar condition and prices. The joke is on the fool who actually buys it.
Take a look at their website and what they have for sale. http://www.porfor.com/

I don't know about 'most'. I don't know anyplace else you can go to find so many cars for 3 grand or less. With the collectibles, sellers can ask for whatever they want, just like anyplace else. There are a lot of dealer cars, so you would expect a little higher price there
  • OscarOscar Member Posts: 63
That is probably true of newer cars. I look for project cars in the time frame I mentioned.

I think there's too much "dumb money" out there driving prices higher. People willing to pay high asks.

The Benz 500E -- wasn't that AMG before it was called AMG?
At any rate, the price looks nuts to me. But I wouldn't know different.

The 500E was not an AMG . AMG had a version of it on the W124 chasiss called the Hammer it was a wild car and they are pricey. MB produced their own version in collaboration with Porsche. These are also pricey. Regular 500E s not touched by AMG (pre-merger) or Porsche do not command a high price.
  • OscarOscar Member Posts: 63
There was another ad for a Tiger at half the price and just as nice.

Those dreamy cars in LA - does Beverly Hills Car Club have a competitor? LOL at 17K for that sad hulk of a Ponton cabrio. Even if it was free with 10 grand in the glovebox, there's no way you aren't going deep in the red, insanely expensive to restore.

The 500E I linked isn't insanely priced, if it is as good as it looks. Wiring harness is a plus, and prices for those have been on solid ground. Don't confuse with a W211 E500 (MY 2003-06), just a normal used car today.

don't see many Pinto cruising wagons around. But that one seems to have an extra zero in the price. If not 2. Must have gotten it from the same Zero store as the SAAB owner. Cool Sonnett, but can't possibly be worth that price. Wonder if you can even get the parts for one of those?

Prior to the impact bumper revision for 1973 the earlier Nova headlight bezels extended to the front corners like this one for the 1969-1972 Nova:

Maybe the engineers needed to revise that piece to accommodate the bigger bumper but the '73/'74 Nova looked clunky and de-contented with the new front end.
