Hi, I currently own my vehicle and the trade value is around $28k. I'm going into a lease on a VW Tiguan. How would the tax work in NJ?

Typically when I trade, I purchase the next Vehicle. I get a tax credit for the value of the traded car. I often come out even or just pay a bit more depending on purchase price of the new vehicle.

My understanding in NJ is that the new vehicle (leased), I only pay for the portion paid, not residual. Is this true?

Lower residual means more depreciation, but if it's over more time, then the monthly could be more or less than that shorter term. All depends on the actual numbers.

More miles per year always means a higher monthly payment.

Yes.. On a lease, you'll only pay tax on the sum of money paid. (upfront + payments). But, it's doubtful you'll get a tax credit on your trade, as the bank is the owner of the leased vehicle, not you. But, we aren't intimately familiar with trade-in rules in NJ, so check with a dealer.

The longer the term, the bigger the chance that your driving needs/mileage will change, and cause the lease to not fit your needs. Also, while you might make it through 36K without paying for tires/brakes, etc, the chances go down, the longer the lease.
