Hi

I am looking at an x30i - MSport pkg. w/ Nav, Heated Steering/Seats, Metallic paint and some odds and ends.
These are my numbers (Brooklyn, NY):

MSRP: $52,855
Selling Price: $48,355 (dealer discount - before cust. incentives)
Term: 36 months
Residual %: 58% (12K miles)
Residual: $30,656
MF: .00177
Tax: 8.875% (rolled into monthly)
Cust. Rebates: $1,250 (this will actually be $1,750 for an April delivery so I expect my monthly to be ~$15 less)

Bank fee, tax on rebate and usual admin stiff (doc prep etc) paid upfront.

Dealer quoted monthly at $657 (rounding)

I used the Edmunds calculator and one from bankrate, and got a monthly of: $647.32
(Again, this is assuming $1,250 BMW rebates as the "down payment")

Dealer confirmed his calc and said I am probably miscalculating the tax (possibly not accounting for interest on capitalized sales tax).

I went back and made some adjustments but no matter how I run it, I never get higher than $651 / mo.

Any thoughts on why the monthlies don't match?

What net cap cost is the dealer using? And, what net cap cost are you using?

The problem with rolling the tax into the cap cost in NY is that you end up paying tax on the tax. That might account for the difference in payment, but until we get the actual cap numbers, we're only guessing.

For my calc I used Selling Price as Cap Cost and the $1,250 rebate as down payment. This got me the $647.
When it was pointed out to me that this neglects the interest charge on the rolled in tax, I went back and added $1,900 to the Cap Cost to represent the tax (i.e. 8.875% tax on the total lease payments without tax [$595 x 36]) and left the "sales tax" box at zero. This got me to about $651 monthly.

Your point about NYS tax-on-tax is likely a winner. A quick back-of-the-envelope calc tells me 8.875% tax on the $1,900 capitalized tax adds about $4.65 / mo additional to the lease ($169 / 36). That seems to account for the discrepancy if we allow for rounding errors in the calcs.

Am I on the right track?

I'd say that would account for the delta between your calculations and the dealers.

We were quite surprised to hear about tax on tax issue in NY. A poster ended up providing a link to the relevant language from the state.

We now do not recommend adding the sales tax to the cap cost for leases in NY, for just that reason.

I am within $1 of that quote.

Two ways to improve the payment:
1. Negotaite a lower selling price
2. Use multiple security deposits (MSDs) to "buy down" the MF
