the red/black car behid it looks like an early Ferrari with Vignale bodywork behind it probably a 212 or 212 Inter ca. 1952, prolly even rarer than the Kaiser-D.

Looks like a pretty outstanding show, Bob.

I like the doors that slide horizontally....very cool although totally nuts for a car. Unfortunately grille but clean sight lines. You can get decent money for one of these.

Actually that image is not from the show;

but yeah they had some pretty neat stuff there. Had a very nice discussion with the owner of a beautiful '30 Model A Victoria; also a beautufully restored '32 Datsun fire truck, which was smaller than a new Mini Cooper! There was even a street rod version of my dad's old '41 Buick Special 2-door sedanette! Being a county fair there was the usual historic John Deeres, etc. Good fun on a hot Sunday afternoon.

was a 1955 Siata 208S powered by a 2liter Fiat 8V (V8 in Italian). IIRC Vignale was the coachbuilder.

a lot of AMC's were built in the city I reside in. It's now just an engine plant for Chrysler.

Those fine AMC/Renault Alliance/ Encore's were made there. My dad had one.It lasted about a year. He had a heck of a time finding a dealer to take it in trade, too.

Yep, the 4.0 I-6 was still made here up until a couple of years ago. Now only the V6's for Chrysler are made here.

I remember that one because it was featured in the first British classic car magazine I ever bought, when I was 11 or so. I read that issue so many times.

A Silver Shadow is the proverbial beater Rolls. They are worth little even mint, and make a MB 6.3 look like a joy to maintain.

Speaking as an outsider that knows nothing about the cars from that era, I gotta say, BOY do cars seem to mimic others from the same time frame.

I mean, that could be anything! First I thought Volvo, then Buick, then Ford...I have no idea! You could tell me it's just about any make and I'd believe you.

I can't even tell you what CONTINENT that is from. :confuse:

It's an 40's-era Buick, not unlike the first car I ever remember, which was my dad's '41 Buick Special 2-door sedanette (fastback). This is a newer version, I would say perhaps a '47, and it is also a (4-door) sedanette.

But am I wrong in saying that cars from the era tend to be cookie-cutter, i.e. same basic form? Differences in the details?

Well, I would agree that '40-era GM cars look a lot alike, as do Ford Corp cars, as do Chrysler Corp cars. It's somewhat harder to tell a DeSoto from a Dodge or Plymouth, but it's not hard to tell a DeSoto from a Chevy or Ford.

cars from any era tend to look alike, especially if you aren't familiar wqi the nuances. It was true in the Brass era, in the 20s and 30s and it's certainly true now.

It shouldn't be hard to figure the vintage and maker of this one=>

I think you're right about me not being familiar with the nuances of styling during that period, so they all seem alike to me.

Come to think of it the Accord/Camry/Sonata/Altima don't look very distinguished nowadays either. I just find it funny how much an era's styling converges.

about a '72 or '73 164. basically the 144 with a stretched nose to accomodate the straight 6 (2.8l IIRC).

Supposedly handled like pigs, at least relative to the 1969 144s that my family had when I learned to drive.

I was wondering if it was an XL. My first car was a 66 Galaxie 2 door HT, 390, sucked gas like it was going out of style - but it would spin the tires nicely.

One reason you might get the impression of "sameness" in 1940s era cars is that World War II seriously disrupted car design, and most 1946-1948 cars are merely very slight re-styles of 1941-42 cars---often with the same body stamping and a few changed trim pieces. Not until 1949 did American cars finally get enough steel and tooling together to come out with cars that differed from the 1941 designs.
