I called a different dealer looking to make sense of how a lease works in Texas.
    A different 340i, different offer:
    Retail Price 62,510
    Disc: 5,000
    Selling Price 57,510
    Taxes 3,715.55
    Doc fee 149
    E-Tag fee 5
    Title 33
    Title conv fee 11
    No trade
    Balance (57,510+3,715.55+149+5+33+11) = 61,423.55

    36 month lease @ 12k/year, Residual noted at 38,131.10
$1,207 down, Monthly payments would be $855.16
$2,500 down, Monthly payments would be $815.59
$5,000 down, Monthly payments would be $739.10

Is there a calculator that I can download that reflects and helps explain how to arrive at these numbers?

The dealer didn't mention the $925 acquisition fee.
Nor did they disclose the money factor used or residual.

.00151 MF (base) and 61% residual for 36/12.
If I add $925 to their balance, I get a payment of $825/mo. vs their $855/mo.
That would suggest that they are marking up the money factor to .00191 (max).

    New numbers:
    Retail Price 62,510
    Disc: 8,510
    Selling Price 54,000
    Taxes 3,488.78
    Doc fee 149
    E-Tag fee 5
    Title 33
    Title conv fee 11
    No trade
    Balance (54,000+3,488.78+149+5+33+11) = 67,686.78
RV 62%, MF 0.00191, Adjusted Cap Cost 58,169.39

    36 month lease @ 10k/year, Residual noted at 38,756.20
$1,207 down, Monthly payments would be $724.39
$2,500 down, Monthly payments would be $684.82

I now understand sales tax [on the negotiated number] is added up front for Texas

Do you know how the dealer went from the selling price [54,000] to the "Adjusted Cap Cost" number [58,169.39]?

It seems as though the MF is a bit of surprise.
What is your overall opinion of this offer? Good, typical/average or bad?

340i, no xDrive, Tech pack, Track pack, Driver Assist, Heated seats, CarPlay, red leather
The car has very expensive wheels from the factory [+4k above track package upgrade] and the wheels must stay.

I'm not sure what the dealer fee is in this case.
    I just learned that the car comes with 20" BMW Style 361 Wheels. Front: 225/35 R20 90Y, Rear: 255/30 R20 92Y

Looks like your Adjusted CAP is the Selling price + tax + acquisition fee. It's a little lower than that, but the $1207 due at signing, is a little more than the first payment and DMV fees, so it balances out.

I get the same payment that they do.
The money factor markup adds about $40/mo. to the payment, but that's a big discount upfront. There is a $2500 lease credit on this model, which allows them to cut the price by that much.
Isn't it amazing that their second offer is $130/mo. less than their first offer?
    I think it's a fair deal.

If the wheels/tires are on the MSRP, they can't change them out to save you money. Since you are in Texas, big fat summer tires should be no issue, other than a higher replacement cost. I bet they look great.

I'm guessing that most already know this, but I just learned something else regarding the 340i lease MF, 0.00151 is the buy rate and 0.00191 is the sell rate.
If I'm understanding this, the dealer keeps the difference in the rate as profit. Perhaps it's a trade-off. They maintain the delta in rate but offer a better discount.

I'm not a big fan of paying interest on debt, so I ask if this approach is customary and reasonable?
  • racerinhoustonracerinhouston Member Posts: 12
I have a second, but separate question. What if, after a year, I decide I really like the car and want to keep it beyond 36 months. Assuming I had the cash, couldn't I buy it out and avoid the interest or would there be penalties and additional taxes? I've read that depending on whose name is on the title, Texas may require sales tax again as if it was resold.

Yeah, the dealer is allowed to mark up the base MF by as much as .00040 for extra profit.

Politely tell them you won't sign a deal, if that's the case; only takes one dealer to meet your numbers. But, as noted, you may have to give back some of the discount from sticker.

Yes, you can buy out the car at any point during the lease.

Not sure how Texas would address the tax situation - I'd suggest you reach out to the department of revenue for clarification.

Hey gents. 2017 330xi in Jersey. Was told MF was .00151 (I see that confirmed here). High, but I guess that is what it is. Is the residual actually 63% on this model? And is there any lease incentives to apply after negotiating a discount?

trying to figure out a ballpark payment. Assume those terms, MSRP 50K, 10% off (because I want that), so adjusted cap cost of 45K. I need to fire up my spreadsheet assuming no other incentives. Michael, what do you get?

    62% for 36/10.

$50K MSRP, $45K cap cost gives me a payment of $504/mo

Taxes and fees due up front.

$2500 lease credit available - payment would drop to $430/mo

well, that is not too bad I guess. more than I wanted to go.

    interesting. she specifically said 63%.

wonder if I showed up on the 31st ready to make a deal, and trade my car, what they could do on a key swap, no money into the deal? Probably not under 500.

Assuming the cap cost is $42,500 (10% off sticker plus the incentive), and you roll the NJ taxes and fees into the lease ($1134 tax, $925 acquisition fee, and I assumed $399 for dealer fee), I get a payment of $502/mo

Still, not a bad payment for a $50K car and virtually nothing out of pocket (first payment and DMV costs).

PS - you're trusting the salesperson to quote you an accurate residual? That's funny...

Whoops, I calculated that wrong ... I've got to add the acquisition fee and dealer fee into the cap cost, then figure the base payment before tax. New payment is $505/mo, not $502.

What is the tax rate? I've been using 7.25%

I was ok at $502, but $505 is just too much!

Tax is now 6.875 I think. They lowered it last year (while jacking up other taxes of course). I think dealer fee might be $299 also. So, drops things a little.

so it sounds like if I went back on Thursday, last day of the month, and said I wanted to swap keys, now money OOP, and would accept a 36/36000 at $500/mo, I would likely be driving home in a snazzy new BMW?

My numbers were based on 36/10, which might eat up a bit of the tax and dealer fee savings. But, close enough.

10 probably works. Though this time around, I quite possibly may be job changing and/or moving during the term, so leasing could be an iffier proposition.

will probably not move forward, though emailing the salesperson for a shot over the bow number, can't hurt!

    another offer
2017 340i, MSRP $60700, selling $49500, fees $1668, 36 mos, 15k, $0 down, $0 drive off. Quoted $648, tax (7.25%) and fees included, trying to get to $623. Seems like there maybe inflated MF, haven't asked for the number....Current lease have 5 payments left, dealer take 2, BMW pays last 3; on the fence b/c I'm at 31k/45k miles allowance on my current lease... thoughts?!

I get $598/mo with tax using those prices (adding the fees to the selling price). Ask for the adjusted cap cost, and how they got there from the selling price.

MF may be marked up, as well.

Big discount. Michael, the remaining lease payments are probably buried in there too.

Can always walk in, make payment offer to sign on the spot, and see what happens.

    Cash Due 36 months
    Rebates: $2,500
    12,000 Miles
    $1,000 $364
    $2,000 $333
    $3,000 $303

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

That is a purchase quote, as CA taxes the monthly payment on a lease.

Ask the dealer for the adjusted cap cost, and how they arrived at that number from the selling price. No mention of the $925 acquisition fee, for example.

    Hi,

I am planning to lease a BMW 320xi and below is the quote I received from one of the BMW dealers in NJ. Can you please let me know if it is a good deal? What are the promotions going and MF and residual in NJ for the same?

    MSRP: $44885
    Selling price:$38397
    Money out of pocket: $2500
    Mileage: 12000 per year

    MONTHLY PAYMENT: $429

    Thanks,
    Raj

    .00151 and 61% for 36/12

What does the out of pocket cover?

As is, your prices give me a payment of $405/mo.

Ask the dealer for the adjusted cap cost.
I forgot acquisition fee. So up front cost about $3,100 in jersey. Less 2500, so $600 to bury in payment. So that could easily account for the extra $24, or most of it.

We recommend that the only money out of pocket should be for the first payment and DMV costs - roll the sales tax and fees into the monthly payment.

Depends on MF though doesn't it?

The extra rent charge for those items doesn't amount to that much. I'd much rather not risk losing the up front money if the car is stolen or totaled. You think Christie or Cuomo will refund the pre-paid taxes?

The only problem with that.. is where do you stop? The money factor is about 3.6% APR equivalent. It's hard to save much money, unless you put up a big chunk, which I wouldn't do.. even if I am only earning 1.15% on it.

Even with those high California fans axes and fees, it still comes out to less that $400 month total

CA caps the doc fee at $80, so that's a plus.

DMV costs are around 1% of MSRP.

Curreny bmw lease ending, leasing again with BMW, is the $350 lease disposition fee for old lease automatically waived or does it need to be in writing and/or on the new lease contract?

Also same question with the pull a head program (bmwfs pays for last 3), does it have to be noted on the new contract, or that's an automatic when leasing with BmW again?

Turning lease to dealer, Dealer provided a "lien payoff verification" form for current lease, with payoff amount less than what is quoted on my account, should I have them match the numbers? $8k difference, or is that between dealer and bmwfs?  will be sure to read my contract before signing, that I'm not trading in my lease and owe $8000 with only 5 payments left!!!

Money factor is marked up the maximum. Now that it's September, the base MF is .00152.

If BMWFS has a pull-ahead program, then the price for the dealer is between them and BMWFS. Normally, the disposition fee is waived, if you enter into a new BMWFS lease. The pull-ahead program shouldn't be any different, but make sure they spell it out. I'd want it in writing.

done! had the sale manager provide a signature and statement, "Owe $0 on lease return," and I included my BMWFS account number on that statement.

    thanks for advice.
